[edit]
Annual Election & Members Meeting
Image

You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our Annual Election & Members Meeting, in-person at Prime Produce in Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan and also via Zoom.

The Members' Meeting is similar to other WikiWednesday meetups, except that its primary function is to elect new members to the Board of Directors. We will elect three board seats – half of the elected seats on the board – and the elected board can appoint up to five more board members.

As part of the Members Meeting, we will also focus on the Wikimedia NYC Programs Plan for the coming year, the Financial Report, and how to participate in our chapter member committees for Tech and Engagement.

Election info:

  • To run for election or to vote, you must be a dues-paying member of Wikimedia New York City, having renewed in the past 12 months.
  • Voting will be both online, via emailed ballots from the ElectionBuddy service, and in-person.
  • The poll will be open for the 48 hours between 8pm EDT on September 28 and 8pm EDT on September 30.
  • For additional information, please consult the Election FAQ.

Meeting info:

Wikidata community on Zenodo: new community managers?

[edit]

Hi Bluerasberry,

Sorry to bother you again, but I wanted to follow up on my previous message about the Wikidata community on Zenodo (link) and my pending membership request (https://zenodo.org/records/22677747).

Since maintaining the community page on your own might be time-consuming, would it make sense to add someone else as a community manager to help share the load? If so, I would be happy to volunteer for this role and help manage membership requests and keep things updated.

Thanks again for your time and help!

Cheers,--Francesco Tosoni (SSSA) (talk) 11:11, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Super nabla: You are invited. Check your Zenodo account.
Incidentally. Please engage with the Zenodo community as you like. If it makes sense for us to have a conversation about policy or scope, then I would do that, and even help make documentation by and for the Wikidata community. The day to day review is, as you say, time consuming, but tickets can be cleared by periodic checks. Bluerasberry (talk) 14:21, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! Image Done: https://zenodo.org/communities/wikidata
(And I've updated the image with the Wikidata logo)
Sure: if any issues come up or if there are doubts about the scope, I'll reach out to you or discuss them with the community.—super nabla(🪰 msg) 14:48, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

editor (non-Freudian) retention

[edit]

Hi Lane! Thank you for the coffee :)

I've heard a rumor (aka, I seem to recall but can't find the link) that you have some resources for editors with expertise, specifically avoiding edit wars with non-experts. I've been running into this quite a bit, and it's really making me want to bail. Naturally the subjects less popular in podcasts/pop science don't gather this kind of opposition, nobody publishes exciting PBS Nova or NPR episodes about lactosyltransferases. Paleo- and biological anthro seem to be hit quite hard with this effect on Wikipedia. It bums me out, but my very strong instinct is always just to teach and explain which generally just clogs up a Talk. I've noticted in particular people tend to strongly adopt and defend the sometimes very niche opinions of individual researchers who broach into the pop science space, despite working consensus being against that position. Any suggestions?

This happened to me most recently on Evolution when I tried to correct the definition from traits (ie, panadaptationism) to allele frequencies and apparently stepped on a hornets nest, until I RfC'd it to an evobio WikiProject and then naturally they were confused as to why anyone was contesting such a basic fact. Neanderthal is currently being rushed to FAC, and I'm getting pushback over a citation whose lead author I was literally chatting with in a room last week. Likewise Jared Diamond and Guns, Germs and Steel. Mausfield (talk) 11:18, 18 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
