Participation:

This is the third newsletter sent by mass mail to members in Wikipedia:WikiProject Genealogy, to everyone who voted a support for establishing a potential Wikimedia genealogy project on meta, and anyone who during the years showed an interest in genealogy on talk pages and likewise.

(To discontinue receiving Project Genealogy newsletters, please see below)

Request:

In order to improve communication between genealogy interested wikipedians, as well as taking new, important steps towards a creation of a new project site, we need to make communication between the users easier and more effective.

At Mail list on meta is discussed the possibility of creating a genealogy-related Wikimedia email list. In order to request the creation of such a list, we need your voice and your vote.

In order to create a new list, we need to put a request it in Phabricator, and add a link to reasoning/explanation of purpose, and link to community consensus. Therefore we need your vote for this now, so we can request the creation of the mail list.

Read more about this email list at Meta; Wikimedia genealogy project mail list where you can support the creation of the mail list with your vote, in case you haven't done so already.

A demo wiki is up and running!

Dear members of WikiProject Genealogy, this will be the last newsletter for 2017, but maybe the most important one!

You can already now try out the demo for a genealogy wiki at https://tools.wmflabs.org/genealogy/wiki/Main_Page and try out the functions. You will find parts of the 18th Pharao dynasty and other records submitted by the 7 first users, and it would be great if you would add some records.

And with those great news we want to wish you a creative New Year 2018!

Introducing the revamped uw-mos1 template

[edit]

Hi, Cannolis, and thanks for your contributions. I noticed that you have used user warning templates like {{uw-mos1}} to advise or warn users about MOS issues, such as at this user Talk page—thanks very much for that. The {{uw-mos1}} template has always suffered from vagueness; if you look at that example on the user's talk page, you'll notice it doesn't say anything about what MOS rule they broke, making it nearly impossible for the user to understand: 1) what they did wrong, 2) how to fix it, or 3) how to avoid making the exact same error next time. In brief, if used without additional wording, the uw-mos1 template assigns blame without explanation or remedy, and is virtually useless to help a willing user improve.

But, good news! The template has been revamped with new features, in particular, a couple of different ways to signal exactly what MOS rule was broken. There are two new parameters you can use for this: |issue=, and |longissue=. Please take a minute to go over the new doc at {{uw-mos1}} about how to use the new params; see especially sections §§ Notes and Examples. Next time you need to advise a user about a MOS style issue, please try out the new features to help the user understand better what they are being templated for.

Once again, many thanks for using {{uw-mos1}} to advise editors about MOS issues; I hope you'll find the new features helpful. Cheers, Mathglot (talk) 16:55, 10 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Interesting, thanks! Cannolis (talk) 17:22, 10 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Revert at DC Comics article

[edit]

excuse me! what's wrong with putting down stuff about the LEGO Batman movie??? what's wrong with that?? That seems very constructive! THE FRICKEN GOOD USERNAMES ARE ALL TAKEN (talk) 19:43, 13 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

You didn't write anything about any movie. You added a template and this bit: "Although it is quite popular, Marvel is still better. And Marvel didn't copy it no matter what anyone says." Cannolis (talk) 19:50, 13 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Oh shoot. That's the first edit I made. I deleted those things afterwards on my second edit. I tried to put the template on first so people would know that I was working on it. Someone must've still worked on it despite me saying that it was in use. I added the whole LEGO Batman Movie paragraph then and since the other person worked on it too, it must've deleted my edits instead of publishing them. I will add them back in later. Sorry for the confusion and also don't mind the username. I was trying to make the username something else but it was "too similar to another user's name". Thank you! THE FRICKEN GOOD USERNAMES ARE ALL TAKEN (talk) 14:08, 14 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Ok, sorry my bad. It wasn't taken out. I was stupid and looked at the wrong edition of the page. Just look. It's completely unbiased. Also, who are you anyway? Do you like partially own some part of Wiki or have you just been sent up in the ranks to tell people that their edits are vandalism? Just wondering. It seems kinda cool to have your job. I'm sorry that some things originally were biased opinions, but the actual part that is there currently is good. Genuinely good. THE FRICKEN GOOD USERNAMES ARE ALL TAKEN (talk) 18:47, 14 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Oh, you are a "recent changes patroller". Cool! How long did it take you to get that job? THE FRICKEN GOOD USERNAMES ARE ALL TAKEN (talk) 18:50, 14 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
By the way, to clarify, Wikipedia doesn't really have "ranks" or anything like that. A recent changes patroller is just the name for someone who looks at recent changes, which can be done by looking at Special:RecentChanges, sometimes with tools like RedWarn, Huggle or WikiShield, but it isn't a formal "job" or anything that gives the person authority over others. Huh. Cool. THE FRICKEN GOOD USERNAMES ARE ALL TAKEN A Person 12:43, 15 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

The OP apparently is referring to this revert at 19:31, 13 Oct. 2026. The revert was proper, as the reverted edit was blatant editor opinion, which is prohibited in Wikipedia articles. Mathglot (talk) 21:30, 14 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Temporary account IP viewer granted

[edit]
The temporary account IP viewer logo, composed of the Wikipedia globe with a user and an IP address

Hello, Cannolis. Per your request, your account has been granted temporary-account-viewer rights. You are now able to reveal the IP addresses of individuals using temporary accounts that are not visible to the general public. This is very sensitive information that is only to be used to aid in anti-abuse workflows. Please take a moment to review Wikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer for more information on this user right. It is important to remember:

  • You must not share IP address data with someone who does not have the same access permissions unless disclosure is permissible as per guidelines listed at Foundation:Policy:Wikimedia Access to Temporary Account IP Addresses Policy.
  • Access must not be used for political control, to apply pressure on editors, or as a threat against another editor in a content dispute. There must be a valid reason to investigate a temporary user. Note that using multiple temporary accounts is not forbidden, so long as they are not used in violation of policies (for example, block or ban evasion).

It is also important to note that the following actions are logged for others to see:

  • When a user accepts the preference that enables or disables IP reveal for their account.
  • Revealing an IP address of a temporary account.
  • Listing the temporary accounts that are associated with one or more IP addresses (using the CIDR notation format).

Remember, even if a user is violating policy, avoid revealing personal information if possible. Use temporary account usernames rather than disclosing IP addresses directly, or give information such as same network/not same network or similar. If you do not want the user right anymore then please ask me or another administrator and it will be removed for you. You may also voluntarily give up access at any time by visiting Special:Preferences. Happy editing! Staraction (talk · contribs) 07:25, 16 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

The existing and answered 12 October request? Edit request templates are not meant to draw attention to a topic. If you're trying to get things moving as the article talk page may not be frequented as often as you'd like, perhaps try the Wikipedia:Teahouse Cannolis (talk) 17:31, 17 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
No, the Made in America request. ~2026-55733-44 (talk) 18:27, 17 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
The one that reads "I want Made in America added to the lead section.", posted on 12 October? Cannolis (talk) 21:45, 17 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes. ~2026-55913-97 (talk) 22:17, 17 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
No, actually. The one that reads "I would like Made in America to be added to the 2nd paragraph at the top page.", posted on 12 February. ~2026-55913-97 (talk) 22:19, 17 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Gotcha. Advice remains the same, try the Teahouse as it seems there just isn't enough traffic on Talk:Whoopi Goldberg for consensus building. Cannolis (talk) 23:37, 17 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
