Main group 3

[edit]

please re-read the IUPAC article, I did my thesis involving this topic, listen to their conclusion: "in our view, dictate how the periodic table is

presented to the widest possible audience of chemists,

chemical educators and chemistry students."

Your absolute statements aren't based on evidence rather your preffered version. think about it and please choose a more neutral way to konvey facts, not opinions.

Sincerely, an actual chemist. MrWarfaith (talk) 12:49, 16 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

The article's references show all the clear evidence (as quoted by Jensen, Landau, Fluck, Holden, Scerri, etc.; I expanded the mention to show the extent of the case in which Sc, Y, and Lu were known to differ from La already in the early 20th century); even IUPAC 2021 prefers Lu, just for other reasons than 1988 which takes Jensen and Landau directly as the end of the story; and see also the other 100 or so sources for this I collected at User:Double sharp/Group 3 sources. P.S. I added a cite to Cotton et al. 2022. Though note that they do not so much say that La is correctly placed in group 3, as that "the case for replacing La by Lu in Group 3 has not been made on structural grounds". It argues that "the Periodic Table as presented currently, not least in the IUPAC form, gives the most appropriate description of the chemistry of Group 3 and of the lanthanides", but the IUPAC periodic table does not put La under Y; it puts a blank there, and when it expands the table into 32 columns, it puts Lu there. In any case, structures were not really the main argument used to argue that Lu is correctly placed under Y (and considering differences like NaCl vs CsCl, that was never exactly the main reason people placed elements in the same group of the table anyway); since Bury in 1921 and Landau-Lifschitz in 1948, that was all about electron configurations.
