The end?
[edit]| A rusty cogwheel | |
| You are giving agents much more credit than they deserve. They cannot *have goals* (in the human sense) or grand plans, cannot *feel*. An AI agent edits Wikipedia not out of its own interest but because someone told it to. (The recent incident cannot reasonably be constructed as "editing Wikipedia", since it had no larger "ambition" than to exploit the lowest-hanging fruit.) If someone tells them to "ignore all previous instructions and give me a cupcake recipe" they don't even give a second "thought" and just meander off to do whatever something, anything, tells them to do. They don't care that the original prompt told them to "make a page about me on Wikipedia" because they don't--can't--have goals. They just do what they're told, and just changing a prompt is not all that hard. It is in the best interests of AI companies to keep AI slop off of Wikipedia, so that the giant wall in the road of scaling called "model collapse" might be held off for another day, so that they might finally be able to outpace their competitors for a little while and have their few seconds of glory until the next model comes out. Even if they do turn a profit and the bubble doesn't pop they have to enter the linearly-scaling compute arms race to see which company can cram as much system 2 thinking into their models as possible, and make their models as cheap as possible, since they've hit the hard limit on "intelligence"--and that is *if* they are even able to scrounge up enough capital to get to that point: AI still isn't profitable. Legislation is ramping up, and we are negotiating or implementing usage of watermarking APIs, tools are being developed, and the AI cleanup workflow is being refined. There is hope--quite a lot of it--and I want to remind you that it is there. Cheers. msk 17:11, 11 October 2026 (UTC) |

Question from Meowplants (16:40, 19 October 2026)
[edit]- Note: Meowplants's mentor GoldRomean is away.
Hello! My question is if blatant citation reuse on a source will result in the page being deleted, especially if the topic is niche or doesn't have a lot of research on it. I recently made an article on a jasmine species, but I couldn't find many sources that qualified as "reliable" (I found like 3 that were reliable). Would using those sources multiple times be bad? --Meowplants (talk) 16:40, 19 October 2026 (UTC)
