Discussion around forestry and climate change mitigation

[edit]

I've started a discussion at WikiProject Climate Change which I've called "How to clean up the mess around trees and mitigation?". As part of that discussion, it has been proposed to merge a few of the forestry articles. Please contribute to the discussion on that talk page to help find clarity on the way forward. Thanks. @Cerebellum: @Nightphoenix90: or any of the 20-odd people listed at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Forestry/Members#Active I see you have an awful lot of forestry knowledge and experience between you - are you able to advise us on this? @Themrbeaumont: I see you joined this project last month - as you know more than us can you advise? Chidgk1 (talk) 08:50, 28 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Dear all

I’m very happy to let you know we are running a competition at Wikiproject Climate Change to encourage people to help improve visual information about climate change including the role forests and deforestation plays. The competition is open until the 17th of May for all language versions of Wikipedia. The top three point scorers will each win a signed copy of The Climate Book by Greta Thunberg.

Please let me know if you have any questions

Thanks :)

Request for input: possible split discussion at Talk:REDD and REDD+

[edit]

I've revived a discussion at Talk:REDD and REDD+#Split article into REDD+ and UN-REDD Programme about whether to re-split the UN-REDD Programme material out from REDD and REDD+ into a separate article (and leave a summary + {{main}} link in the parent article).

Input from interested editors is welcome. Please comment on the article talk page section linked above so the discussion stays in one place. Yourecoveredinbees (talk) 23:40, 30 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

State Forests

[edit]

Might state forests fall into this wikiproject? If so, I might join in on this project.

I recently started working on Florida Forest Service and the List of Florida state forests pages and was curious if either of those pages are of interest to y'all. I'm also thinking of working on those 38 individual state forest articles as well.🌴Operator 16 (talk) 19:16, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

They look like forestry pages to me. I'll watchlist both. - Dank (push to talk) 21:05, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

WP:Forestry Importance Rubric

[edit]

The assessment page doesn't define importance, and the ratings show it. We have Larch and Oak rated Top but Pine, Spruce and Fir are just High. Indian Forest Service is Top but United States Forest Service is likewise only High. Deforestation in Haiti is Top while the similar topics of Deforestation in Indonesia and Deforestation of the Amazon rainforest are just High. Savanna is Top. 189 articles have no rating at all. I'd like to propose a short scale, similar to the one WikiProject Florida adopted in August. Forestry is a broad field (or forest), so the tiers have to measure how central a topic is to the field rather than how far its fame or recognition reach. Below is my proposal for this though I'm bringing this to the Project for further input and feedback.

ImportanceCriterionTypical examples
TopA core concept of the field; things a reader can't understand forestry without. Maybe we keep this to about 20 articles (we have 16 at Top right now for reference).Forest, Forestry, Tree, Silviculture, Deforestation, Forest management
HighA major branch, practice or tool of forestry, or a subject of international impact.Silvicultural systems (Clearcutting, Shelterwood cutting), major timber types (Pine, Oak), national forest services, international bodies, founders of the profession (Gifford Pinchot)
MidNational or regional significance, or a well-defined subtopic of a High article.A country's forestry or deforestation, sub-national forest services and forest systems, important timber species, major pests and diseases, forests that are landmarks in forestry history
LowA single site, person, product or detail of mainly specialist or local interest.Individual national, state or community forests; most foresters; individual companies, journals and trails

Three rules of thumb I used to judge the above:

  1. Rate importance to forestry, not to the world. Savanna matters a great deal, but it's a grassland biome and sits at the edge of this project's scope. An article can be High for one project and Low for this one. That's how the per-project rating is supposed to work.
  2. Rate the topic, not the article. A Featured Article on one forest is still Low, and a stub on a core concept is still Top or High.
  3. When unsure, rate one level lower. Inflation causes more trouble than under-rating does, and anyone can raise a rating later.

If there's support, I'll add this to the Assessment page and work through the unrated articles. I'd leave the existing Top and High ratings for discussion here rather than changing them on my own. I should say that I have articles in this area (Florida state forests and the Florida Forest Service), so I'd rather someone else rate those honestly.

Also, if this goes through, It may be good to have a push to bring all Top or High articles to GA or something. Coordinated efforts should be a part of WikiProjects more so maybe we can get the ball rolling. 🌴Operator 16 (talk) 16:37, 4 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
