Welsh national identity

[edit]

I was looking at the Culture of Wales page and was sad to see that there is no specific page on Welsh national identity. This is a disappointment to compare with Scottish national identity or British national identity. I believe it is important to have a specific page on this as elements have not/cannot be discussed on Welsh culture or Welsh history articles. Can we see a situation where it would be possible to re-establish the page? But of course at the same time not a page only paraphrasing from other articles? Cwmcafit (talk) 09:01, 6 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

It was decided in 2023 to redirect it to Culture of Wales - see Talk:Welsh_national_identity for the discussion. Tony Holkham (Talk) 09:27, 6 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
As long as it begins with the sources, and is not just a WP:COATRACK for a reprise of Welsh Nationalism, then yes, in principle, absolutely on board with this. Some literature we should be familiar with before starting:
  • Mann, R. & Fenton, S., 2017. Nation, Class and Resentment: The Politics of National Identity in England, Scotland and Wales. Basingstoke: Palgrave Macmillan.
  • Evans, D., 2019. Welshness in ‘British Wales’: Negotiating National Identity at the Margins. Nations and Nationalism, 25(1), pp.167–190.
  • Henderson, L.J., 2007. Writing Wales: Welsh Historians and the Search for Welsh Identity, 1970–1997. PhD thesis, Queensland University of Technology.
  • Williams, S., 2018. Rethinking Stateless Nations and National Identity in Wales. Cham: Palgrave Macmillan.
Historiography:
There will be more, but starting with those and following their referencing should give a firm graph of the historiography of the subject. It is a notable subject in its own right, but writing an article without knowledge of the sources would just fork Culture of Wales and/or Welsh Nationalism. Also perhaps 'Morris, Jan. 2000. Wales Epic Views of a Small Country. London: Penguin'? John Desmond (talk) 10:44, 6 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for these. Richard Wyn Jones has also written a few articles . It is a complex subject as history, language and culture play a large part in national identities like Welsh national identity. It is also an abstract topic as how you describe your national identity is different according to individual preferences. Also the dominance of British/English national identity has limited research into Welsh national identity. But certainly when considering Census figures, that there are a majority of people who describe themselves as Welsh only in Wales, it is a topic worth its own article . I would like to start to write an article but would need support and consensus. Cwmcafit (talk) 14:15, 6 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
I see you've started thinking about it in your User:Cwmcafit/sandbox#Welsh_national_identity sandbox. I'm sure there will be plenty of support. Tony Holkham (Talk) 15:57, 6 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
No issue with restarting an article on it, as long as it doesn't just copy and focus a lot on history and culture as covered in other articles as the previous attempt. DankJae 06:57, 7 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Yr Wyddfa toponymy

There is a discussion taking place at Talk:Snowdon#Toponymy:_Yr_Wyddfa_in_1198 about how to source the earliest use of 'Yr Wyddfa' to 1198. You are welcome to contribute. A.D.Hope (talk) 17:59, 29 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Welsh Physics Teachers Conference

[edit]

Would it be possible to have a page for the Welsh Physics Teachers Conference? It is now something of an institution and this will be it's 25th year. Over the years there have been many notable speakers, and obviously a lot of physicists and astronomers from Welsh universities as well as further afield. It also now has an online element and so includes teachers from across the globe, including some from the USA and New Zealand. The first conference was in Builth Wells but it moved to Christ College in Brecon and has been there ever since. Funded by the Institute of Physics, it is organised by Cerian Angharad MBE. If a page existed I think we might be able to find the information for many of the speakers over the years. ~2026-48718-17 (talk) 17:01, 7 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

I will look into how many secondary sources there are to establish notability on this topic, then get back to you. Edlectro28 (talk) 17:12, 7 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Searches return about 3 main sources, all of which seem to be reporting the same thing. In fact, most of the searches for the topic result in Institute of Physics in Wales results. Then we have a small mention in Rhyl Journal So unless the topic gets a fair few more reliable secondary sources, reporting a good amount of new information, pop up, then I think the answer is no for now. Apologies. If you have any other reliable sources then the ones from this that give enough information for article, I'll reconsider. Thanks Edlectro28 (talk) 20:56, 7 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Latch Wales

[edit]

Hi! Latch Wales is a cancer charity based in Cardiff, and I would like to get the article to Good Article status. I opened up a peer review request, which didn't go how I'd planned and pretty much died out. Before nominating the article, there's a few things (listed on the talk page) that I'd like to improve before nominating the article for GA status, and anything else that can be added or improved to take the article to GA status would be great. I've also posted this on Wikipedia:Cardiff. Thanks guys, I'd really love to do this. Edlectro28 (talk) 17:10, 7 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

It's also worth mentioning as an aside the article has an accepted DYK waiting to be promoted, so if anyone could quickly do that, that'd be great. Thanks. Edlectro28 (talk) 21:26, 7 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Discussion at Talk:Marina Diamandis § Greek citizenship and using "Greek-Welsh"

[edit]

Image You are invited to join the discussion at Talk:Marina Diamandis § Greek citizenship and using "Greek-Welsh", which is within the scope of this WikiProject. Whether she has Greek citizenship to be now described as (also) "Greek" as she is born outside Greece, but instead in Wales. Previously the article had long used "Welsh" only. Addition of an article

I’ve added the article about Daniel Lleufer Thomas as being within the scope of the project. Comments invited. John Desmond (talk) 12:57, 23 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Wikibirthday event in Cardiff for Wales based editors

[edit]

Hi! 2026 marks 25 years of Wikipedia and 15 years of Wikimedia UK. We threw a birthday party in London back in June but for our Wales based editors we have a birthday party event in Cardiff on the evening of 3rd November. If anyone here is interested in meeting other local editors and would like to come, the information you need is here https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetup/Cardiff/WikiBirthdayWales and please can you add your name to register (so I can make sure I have enough snacks and space!). Any questions feel free to message me or email me via Wiki.

Best wishes / Cofion cynnes Gemma Coleman (WMUK) (talk) 14:35, 8 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
