The 64th EPRA Meeting has come to a close! 🔚 From 14 to 16 October, 150 participants from 52 regulatory authorities gathered in the lovely city of Dublin for three days of exchange, collaboration and insightful discussions on two key themes: Addressing declining trust: Participants explored the implications of declining trust in media and institutions and reflected on the role NRAs can play in addressing this vital challenge. Protecting and empowering minors: Against the backdrop of a rapidly changing regulatory framework for online child protection, young people, representatives of social media and online platforms, and regulators exchanged best practices and discussed practical challenges in balancing children’s safety with their right to participate fully in online spaces. 🫱🏼🫲🏼 A heartfelt thank you to our Irish host Coimisiún na Meán for the warm welcome and for helping make this meeting such a success. 🤝On 25 September, EMIL members met online for a timely discussion on “Social Media Age Restrictions: What’s Next for Media Literacy?” The meeting provided an opportunity to reflect on how media regulators and media literacy practitioners can continue empowering children and parents to engage safely and confidently in the digital world. • Jutta Croll (Stiftung Digitale Chancen) presented key findings from the European Commission’s Special Panel on Child Safety Online and outlined the main elements of the proposed EU Kids Act with an emphasis on children’s rights • Professor Michael Dezuanni (Australian Media Literacy Alliance and Queensland University of Technology) shared insights into the early impact of Australia’s social media ban on children, young teenagers and parents, and its implications for media literacy policies and activities. • Prof. Dr. Tobias Dienlin (University of Zurich) provided an update on the PROMISE: Improving social media policies for youth well-being's project: “Promoting Well-Being in Preteens, Adolescents, and Young Adults: Toward Improved Social Media Policies.” The presentations and moderated discussion highlighted the importance of anticipating the potential impact of social media restrictions on media literacy policies and activities, while ensuring that children and parents remain involved, informed and empowered. 👏Many thanks to all contributors and to EMIL participants for their active engagement and for providing food for thought for this important conversation. PROMISE is proud to collaborate with the European Platform of Regulatory Authorities (EPRA) as one of our project partners. EPRA brings together 56 regulatory authorities from 47 countries across Europe, creating a unique forum for exchanging knowledge, experiences, and approaches to emerging challenges in media and digital governance. Through two annual in-person meetings and regular online working groups, members share insights, discuss new regulatory developments, and address common challenges together. EPRA facilitates dialogue among regulators, policymakers, researchers, and civil society, helping to strengthen evidence-informed approaches to media regulation. As debates around social media and young people's well-being continue to evolve, collaboration between research and regulatory communities has never been more important. PROMISE seeks to contribute rigorous evidence on how social media policies and platform design influence youth well-being. By working with partners such as EPRA, we hope our findings can contribute to broader conversations on effective, proportionate, and evidence-informed digital policy across Europe. Partnerships like these ensure that research becomes part and parcel of discussions on and approaches to creating healthier digital environments for young people. https://www.epra.org/

🚀 First meeting of the Conseil de l'Europe's expert group on media regulators in a platform-based environment! 📶 As the digital landscape rapidly evolves, there is a growing need to discuss the changing roles of media regulation and media regulators in Europe. On 26-27 March, the newly formed Committee of Experts (MSI-eREG) has started working on a guidance note designed to help member states, regulators, and other stakeholders stay relevant and effective in a media landscape increasingly shaped by digital platforms. Many experts from EPRA member regulatory authorities are serving on the Committee, including Stephanie Comey (Ireland), who has been elected as Chair. The EPRA Secretariat is proud to participate as an observer in this timely initiative. 📃 The Committee is set to deliver a guidance note by the end of 2027. 💡 We look forward to the guidance note to inspire effective, forward-thinking media regulation and strengthen the role of independent media NRAs as guardians of the public interest in times of disruptive changes. 🌍Find out more on the agenda, supporting documents and next steps: https://lnkd.in/eabjs7cJ Rowena Burke, Stephanie Comey, Michal Hradický, Katerina Mantzou, Tanja Kerševan, Michèle Ledger, Rasmus Kleis Nielsen, Krisztina Rozgonyi, Maria Luisa Stasi, Salih Karabulut, Mark Cole, Elena Brodeala, Irina Tomova
