Rialtóir meáin na hÉireann | Ireland’s media regulator

About us

Coimisiún na Meán is Ireland’s agency for developing and regulating a thriving, diverse, creative, safe and trusted media landscape. This means having a mix of different voices, opinions and sources of news. This means protecting children and all of us from harmful content. Our responsibilities are to: • Oversee the funding of and support the development of the wider media sector in Ireland. • Oversee the regulation of broadcasting and video-on-demand services. • Develop and enforce the Irish regulatory regime for online safety. Is é Coimisiún na Meán an ghníomhaireacht in Éirinn a fhorbraíonn agus a rialaíonn earnáil na meán atá faoi bhláth, éagsúil, cruthaitheach, sábháilte agus iontaofa. Ciallaíonn sé seo meascán de ghuthanna, de thuairimí agus d’fhoinsí nuachta éagsúla. Ciallaíonn sé seo leanaí agus gach duine againn a chosaint ó ábhar díobhálach. Tá na dualgais seo a leanas orainn: • Maoirseacht a dhéanamh ar an maoiniú agus an tacaíocht a thugtar d’fhorbairt na meán in Éirinn i gcoitinne. • Maoirseacht a dhéanamh ar rialáil na craoltóireachta agus na seirbhísí físe ar éileamh. • Córas rialála na sábháilteachta ar líne in Éirinn a fhorbairt agus a chur i bhfeidhm

  • ❓ How can regulators help create safer digital media environments for children and young people while ensuring their rights, participation and access to information are respected?  🫱🏼🫲🏼 Today's thematic session at the 64th EPRA Conference convened regulators, policymakers and industry representatives to discuss the evolving landscape of minor protection across digital media and to explore emerging challenges and regulatory responses.  🎤 The session was sponsored by Stephanie Comey, Chair of EPRA, and was co-produced by Karen McAuley, Director of Policy for Children and Vulnerable Adults at Coimisiún na Meán, and Rachel Madden, Assistant Director for Children and Vulnerable Adults at Coimisiún na Meán.  🙏🏼 A notable feature of the session was the inclusion of young people's perspectives, provided by two members of the Webwise Ireland Youth Advisory Panel, Grace Millock and Joshua Cullen, who participated across two stakeholder panels. Their contributions ensured that discussions were grounded in the experiences, expectations and needs of those most directly affected by digital regulation.  🔊 They were joined by representatives from major social media platforms and civil society organisations, facilitating a nuanced and balanced discussion that reflected a wide range of perspectives on the challenges and opportunities of protecting minors in the digital environment.  📃 Bringing together expertise from across the EPRA network, today's discussions highlight the importance of collaboration, knowledge sharing and evidence-based approaches to addressing one of the most significant regulatory challenges facing the digital media landscape.

  • 📢 Our Commissioner for Broadcasting and Video-on-demand, Aoife MacEvilly, welcomed delegates this morning for the first day of the 64th EPRA Conference, and highlighted the value of international cooperation in meeting shared regulatory challenges. Stephanie Comey, Chairperson of EPRA and Director of Media Literacy & User Education here at Coimisiún na Meán, formally opened the conference and spoke about the importance of collaboration and cooperation among regulators across Europe.  Throughout the day, regulators from across Europe examined the implications of declining trust in media and society, and the role National Regulatory Authorities (NRAs) can play in responding to this evolving challenge.  Drawing on recent research showing a continued decline in public trust in news across many markets, delegates then discussed the factors contributing to this trend and considered how regulators can support media organizations in fostering trust, credibility and public confidence.  Sponsored by Stanislav Matějka, EPRA Senior Vice-Chairperson, and developed by John William Carey, Senior Associate, Content Policy, Ofcom, and Rowena Burke, Head of International Content Policy, Ofcom, the session explored how declining levels of trust affect the wider information environment and, ultimately, the effectiveness of media regulation.   🫱🏼🫲🏼 Thank you to all speakers, panelists and delegates for contributing to today's insightful discussions. We look forward to continuing the conversation throughout the conference.

Meet one of our founding members: Australia’s online safety regulator, the eSafety Commissioner Commissioner (eSafety). eSafety Commissioner has a wide remit to protect Australians and promote safer, more positive experiences online. It works to reduce risk, remediate harm and keep online service providers accountable by: • encouraging prevention: helping people understand how to use online services as safely as possible and get help if they need it. • providing protection: offering a safety net when prevention measures fail. eSafety has legal powers to investigate complaints and limit the impacts of cyberbullying of children, adult cyber abuse, image-based abuse (intimate imagery or video shared without a person’s consent), as well as illegal and restricted online content. including child sexual exploitation and abuse material, terrorism or other extreme violence. • driving proactive and systemic change: increasing industry transparency and accountability by seeking information from online services, enforcing Australia’s online safety laws and encouraging services to embed user safety from the start through Safety by Design. The online world is not confined by national borders and eSafety recognises international cooperation is required to improve outcomes. That’s why eSafety partners with regulators and other organisations around the world, sharing information and collaborating to create a safer and more responsible online environment. You can find out more about eSafety’s work at: www.esafety.gov.au

From the characters we see on screen to the people making decisions behind it, representation in film, television and broadcast media shapes how disability is understood and how disabled people see themselves reflected in culture. Join us for our next Access Media session facilitated by Sinéad Burke and speakers including Eleanor McSherry, Alannah Uí Geargáin and Karen Scully, where we explore all sides of the picture - the stories being told, how they're being told, and who is telling them.
