Meet Becky Cameron

Meet Becky Cameron

When I bought my first house in Marietta 40 years ago, I had no idea a national battlefield surrounded my neighborhood. A couple of years later, I discovered its trails, and I’ve been walking them ever since.

Countless miles later, I still love having a trail for every mood. Whether I’m ready for a strenuous hike or an easy stroll, seeking sunshine or shade, or choosing between a rocky path and a smooth one, the park always offers a way to get outside.

Some of my fondest memories are of hiking those trails with my children. Over the years, Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park has given our family more than a beautiful place to walk. It has deepened our sense of history, nurtured our appreciation for the woods, and become a place that feels like home.

Workday Report: October 2026

Workday Report: October 2026

This covers the Rescheduled Monthly workday for October 17. It covers the southern end of the Hardage Mill Trail.

On the third attempt we completed the workday (September and last weekend’s October were rained out). We parked at the end of the Pigeon Hill parking lot. We had 7 crew leaders. They were Bill, Donald, Eric, Kerstin, Robert, Tom, and me. We had 8 Hillgrove High School JROTC students, plus 4 adult volunteers from the Atlanta Outdoor Club, 7 if you count Kerstin, Robert, and me. We had 5 Ambassadors, they were Bill, Dhiran, and Laurie. Allen and Ann were under instruction.

I did introductions and the safety brief near Hardage Field and mentioned this workday was part of the Department of Interior’s “Great American Expedition” celebration. We then walked the length of the Noses Creek Trail to the southern end of the Hardage Mill Trail where the tools were staged. Kirsten, Robert, and I took our 12 volunteers and started working clockwise on the Hardage Mill Trail stopping as need to deberm. Bill, Eric, and Tom cleaned the drains at the end of the Noses Creek Trail and Whitlock Road, then moved the remaining tools to the Noses Creek Bridge and started counterclockwise toward us. After we met, I took 7 of the volunteers and debermed to stop between the northern end of the Hardage Mill Trail and Noses Creek that we did not get done when we did the northern end in April. We also removed a blowdown as we worked.

Workday 10-23-26

This covers the Midway Christian School Corporate workday for October 23. We met at the picnic area where I did introductions, reviewed the workplan, and did a safety brief.

We had 4 crew leaders for the workday. The Crew Leaders were Bill, Eric, Pam, and me. I did registration and Pam was prepared to show them where to park. They arrived in a bus. Bill and Eric loaded the gator with tools, water, and a first aid kit. We had 11 students and 2 adult volunteers.

We started at the concrete drainage ditch behind the visitor center. Splitting into 3 groups, Bill and Pam took the first group and cleaned the ditch starting at the trail, I took the second group and middle part, Eric took the third group and the bottom to Kennesaw Mountain Road. After finishing the ditch, we started deberming the Pickett Line Trail leap frogging from spot to spot that needed to be debermed. We stopped a couple of times to take breaks with either Bill or I talked about the history of the mountain and the battle. These were junior high school kids.

Meet Grace and Duke

Meet Grace and Duke

If you’ve ever taken a hike on the Kolb Farm Loop trails, you’ve probably spotted Grace and her adorable pup, Duke!

They’re always there, greeting everyone with a warm smile and a tail wag!

When we asked what makes this mountain special to her, she started with a bright smile!

“The park reminds me of the forests back home in Kenya. Of course, we didn’t hike them like we do here, but the natural beauty is the same.

In the park, I feel such peace and joy!”

Grace works at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital and hiking the trails is a fantastic way for her to unwind and recharge!

We always enjoy seeing you and Duke out there! Thanks for being such a wonderful friend to the park!

Kennesaw Mountain Education Division Receives Regional Recognition

Kennesaw Mountain Education Division Receives Regional Recognition

Recently, the education team at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park was nominated for the 2026 Excellence in Volunteerism Award for the southeast region of the National Park Service. In 2025-26, they have served 3,617 students through field trips. The Friends of Kennesaw Mountain is proud to support their efforts to bring Kennesaw Mountain’s story to school groups across the Atlanta area.

2026 Excellence in Volunteerism Award Nominees

The Excellence in Volunteerism Awards recognize the volunteers and volunteer program leaders whose dedication strengthens parks across the Southeast Region. This year’s nominees represent the many ways individuals and teams make a lasting impact through their time, talent, and commitment to the National Park Service mission. Their contributions support meaningful visitor experiences, resource stewardship, education, and community engagement. We invite you to explore their stories and celebrate the people who help make our parks stronger every day.

Kennesaw Mountain NBP Education Division

Over the last two years, Kennesaw Mountain NBP’s education program has grown substantially in scope and effectiveness. While the park has enjoyed a robust program for some time, it is most recently that it’s true potential has been recognized and refined. This is largely due to the efforts of a core group of dedicated volunteers.  Specifically, their innovation comes from developing relationships within the volunteer group and creating an incredible level of organization. This involves helping to organize annual trainings, developing SOPs for guided field trips, assisting in the development of curriculum-based programming, and actively recruiting and training prospective volunteers in the community. The impact of these actions has led to an extremely effective and efficient education division that has already reached over 1,000 more students in the community than last year.

Meet Christa, Mary, Delores, and Angela

Meet Christa, Mary, Delores, and Angela

As the tiniest hint of fall begins to creep into the Saturday morning air, the park quickly fills with hikers, runners, history enthusiasts, photographers, and families. There is a familiar buzz all around-excited conversation, laughter, and cheerful greetings drifting through the morning.

This month, we chatted with a few hikers from the Atlanta Outdoor Club, who had gathered at the Visitor Center before heading out on the trails.

Meet Christa, Mary, Delores, and Angela, four regular park hikers who were happy to share why they love Kennesaw Mountain.

Their answers came easily. They talked about how amazing it is to walk among history, how beautiful the park is, and how much they appreciate the signs and well-maintained trails that make it easy to find your way around.

They also mentioned the joy of spotting wildlife- and, yes, the bathrooms! We couldn’t agree more. The day felt even more special because Delores was celebrating her birthday. She said she loves being able to get in a great hike and workout at the park. Happy birthday, Delores! We’re so glad you chose to celebrate with us.

Friends of Kennesaw Mountain Receives National Park Foundation Grant

Friends of Kennesaw Mountain Receives National Park Foundation Grant

Friends of Kennesaw Mountain is excited to share that we’ve received a grant from the National Park Foundation to support our continued growth and help us connect with our community in even more meaningful ways.

This support will help us strengthen the tools we use every day from technology and communications to marketing and outreach-so we can better connect with the more than 2.5 million people who visit Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park each year.

In the year ahead, our campaign, “This Mountain Moves Us,” will help shape new stories, events, outreach opportunities, and simple ways for neighbors, visitors, volunteers, and supporters to feel more connected to the park.

Whether you hike the beautiful trails, bring family and friends to explore, enjoy the history, volunteer your time, or simply love having this park in our backyard, we hope this campaign helps more people see the many ways they can be part of its future.

We’re grateful to The National Park Foundation for investing in this work, and we’re looking forward to sharing what’s next and how this mountain moves us!
