IRF India Chapter has been actively involved in multiple & diverse areas of work related to road safety issues.

About us

IRF India Chapter has embarked upon an on-ground Road Safety validation programme covering 7 worst affected highway stretches of 100-150 kms each in the 7 States with highest road accidents, namely, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh. The objective of the exercise is to transform these highway stretches, in association with the State Governments and Corporate India, into forgiving roads with almost zero fatalities and serious injuries. The transformation is intended through a series of corrective road safety management measures addressing the 5Es of road safety namely, Engineering of Roads, Engineering of Vehicles & Policy Intervention, Education, Enforcement and Emergency Care. The International Road Federation IRF India Chapter has been active in India since February 2009 with aims and objectives in consonance with those of its Geneva based parent body, International Road Federation Geneva Programme Centre, which had initiated and consolidated Road Safety activities in a major way in India since 2005. Additionally, IRF-IC works for economic, safer and sustainable roads through improved design, construction, maintenance and management. It brings together a formidable body of expertise and experience of its Indian members, from both private and public sectors, engaged in road infrastructure development and related business for furthering the cause of (i) Road Safety (ii) Environment (iii) Road Finance and (iv) Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS).

  • EMERGENCY CARE IS NOT AN OPTION. IT IS A RIGHT. The Supreme Court of India’s recognition of trauma care as an integral part of the Right to Life under Article 21 reinforces a critical message: saving lives after a road crash is as important as preventing the crash itself. At the International Road Federation – India Chapter (IRF-IC), Emergency Care is an integral pillar of our 5E Road Safety Programme, alongside Engineering of Roads, Engineering of Vehicles & Policy Corrections, Education, Enforcement. Every minute matters after a road crash. Timely first aid, trained bystanders, efficient ambulance services, coordinated emergency response and accessible trauma care can make the difference between life and death. The way forward requires collective action: 🔹 Strengthen emergency response systems through effective coordination among emergency services, ambulances and hospitals. 🔹 Build first-responder capacity by training police personnel, drivers and citizens in first aid and trauma response. 🔹 Empower Good Samaritans to help road crash victims without fear or unnecessary legal complications. 🔹 Improve access to trauma care to ensure that every victim receives timely and appropriate medical assistance. 🔹 Translate policy into action through effective implementation, monitoring and accountability. At IRF-IC, our road safety initiatives recognise that the responsibility does not end when a crash occurs. It extends to ensuring that every possible effort is made to save a life. Safer roads save lives. Effective emergency care saves lives that might otherwise be lost. Let us work towards a road safety ecosystem where no life is lost simply because timely help was unavailable. 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/gE5FPUJx #IRFIC #RoadSafety #EmergencyCare #TraumaCare #SafeSystem #RoadSafetyIndia #GoodSamaritan #RoadSafetyForAll

  • From a high-speed expressway to a model safe corridor 🚦 IRF-IC & MSRDC Join Hands to Make Samruddhi Mahamarg a Model Safe Corridor! The International Road Federation – India Chapter (IRF-IC) and the (Maharashtra State Road Development Corp (MSRDC) ) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 9 October 2026 at Kohinoor Square, Mumbai (MSRDC Office) to implement an integrated 5E Road Safety Programme across the approximately 701 km Samruddhi Mahamarg, connecting Nagpur and Mumbai. The MoU was signed by Dr. Anil B. Gaikwad, Managing Director, MSRDC, and Mr. K. K. Kapila, Founder President, IRF-IC, in the presence of: •Mr. S. K. Survase, Chief Engineer, MSRDC •Mr. Hemant Jagtap, Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to the Managing Director, MSRDC •Mr. D. O. Taode, Vice President, IRF-IC •Mr. Pawan Kant, CEO, Interise •Ms. Aruna Shankari, COO, IRF-IC From a high-speed expressway to a model safe corridor The initiative adopts the Safe System Approach, recognising that road safety cannot be achieved through engineering interventions alone. It requires coordinated action across five critical pillars: 🔹 Engineering of Roads: Road Safety Audit of the entire 701 km corridor, with prioritised recommendations to address safety deficiencies. 🔹 Engineering of Vehicles & Policy Advocacy: Strategic advocacy and stakeholder engagement to strengthen road safety practices. 🔹 Education & Awareness: Road safety education across approximately 100 schools located along the expressway corridor. 🔹 Enforcement & Traffic Management: Five to seven specialised capacity-building sessions for highway police personnel, focusing on speed management, lane discipline, wrong-side driving and crash prevention. 🔹 Emergency Care: First Aid and Trauma Care training for approximately 500–700 first responders to strengthen assistance during the critical period following a road crash. The bigger vision This partnership goes beyond a conventional road safety audit. It aims to translate findings into actionable interventions, strengthen inter-agency coordination, improve road-user behaviour and enhance emergency response. The ultimate objective is to develop Samruddhi Mahamarg as a Safe Corridor Demonstration Project (SCDP), creating a framework that can inform road safety improvements on other high-speed corridors across India. A world-class expressway is not defined by speed and connectivity alone, but by how safely every road user reaches their destination. Together, let us work towards safer journeys and fewer lives lost on our roads. #IRFIC #MSRDC #SamruddhiMahamarg #RoadSafety #SafeSystemApproach #VisionZero #HighwaySafety #RoadSafetyAudit #EmergencyResponse
