Member of the IRF Young Professionals Programme Shriti Kishore shares that inclusive mobility is essential to economic opportunity, yet affordability, safety and social discrimination can prevent women and transgender and gender-diverse people from fully benefiting from public transport. In her article, she examines how mobility barriers restrict access to employment, education, healthcare and other essential services, even where transport infrastructure exists. HAPPENING THIS WEEK | Join us for a 90-minute workshop exploring how better collection, analysis, and application of WVC data can accelerate the adoption of nature-friendly approaches to road planning and investment: https://lnkd.in/eMeSqSpw Date: 22 October 2026 Time: 9:00am-10:30am ET / 1:00pm – 2:30pm GMT Wildlife-vehicle collisions (WVC) are one of the few environmental impacts of roads that simultaneously affect human safety, infrastructure performance, money, and biodiversity. An estimated 500,000 incidents occur annually in Europe (~300 deaths, ~$1 billion in costs), and 1-2 million in the US (~200 deaths, $8 billion in costs). Despite this scale, WVC data remains fragmented and underused in road planning. As countries increasingly commit to nature-friendly approaches in development and resilient infrastructure, integrating biodiversity information into road planning and management is becoming an operational necessity rather than an environmental add-on. At the XVII International Symposium “Road Accidents Prevention 2026” in Novi Sad, Serbia held from 14–15 October, IRF Project Manager Iona Kirkpatrick presented findings from Benchmarking Road Safety Performance in the Roads4All - Horizon Europe Project Use Case Countries. Drawing on the IRF World Road Statistics (https://lnkd.in/dh-XAM3m), her presentation compared road safety trends in Estonia, Greece, Croatia, Serbia and Italy from 2018 to 2023. The analysis showed why national fatality rates tell only part of the story. Improvements in overall performance can mask growing risks for pedestrians, cyclists and motorised two- and three-wheeler users. By combining fatality outcomes with infrastructure, vehicle and exposure-related indicators, the proposed benchmarking framework can help countries identify persistent risks, learn from one another and inform more targeted road safety interventions.
