블랙버딩(영어: blackbirding)은 19세기와 20세기 초 태평양 지역에서 계약 하인을 인신매매하던 관행이었다.[2][3] 이는 노예 무역법 1807과 노예 폐지법 1833이 호주를 포함한 대영제국 전역에서 노예제를 폐지했음에도 불구하고, 종종 노예제의 한 형태로 묘사된다.[4] 이 무역은 태평양의 섬들에서 수만 명의 원주민을 호주 및 다른 유럽 식민지로 운송하기 위해 강제, 속임수, 납치에 자주 의존했으며, 종종 대서양 노예 무역과 유사한 조건에서 플랜테이션에서 일하게 했다.[5] 카나카스 또는 남태평양 섬 주민으로 알려진 이 블랙버딩된 사람들은 파푸아뉴기니, 솔로몬 제도, 바누아투, 니우에, 이스터섬, 길버트 제도, 투발루, 비스마르크 제도의 섬 등에서 끌려왔다.[5]
이러한 노동자들을 획득하는 데 관여한 선박의 소유주, 선장, 선원들은 블랙버더로 불렸다. 블랙버딩 선박은 1840년대부터 태평양에서 운항을 시작하여 일부 경우 1930년대까지 계속되었다. 이러한 저렴한 노동력에 대한 수요는 주로 뉴사우스웨일스주, 퀸즐랜드주, 사모아, 누벨칼레도니, 피지, 타히티섬, 하와이주의 사탕수수, 면화, 커피 플랜테이션에서 발생했다.[6][7] 오클랜드 (뉴질랜드)에서는 소수의 남태평양 섬 주민들이 아마 공장에서 일했다.[8] 남태평양 밖의 블랙버딩 사례로는 서호주 진주 산업 초기 니콜만과 브룸 (웨스턴오스트레일리아주)에서 주변 지역의 애버리지니를 블랙버딩한 경우가 있다.[9] 페루, 멕시코, 과테말라 및 아메리카 대륙의 다른 지역에서는 블랙버더들이 아시엔다에서 일할 노동자나 친차 제도의 구아노 매장지를 채굴할 노동자를 찾았다.[10]

While there is evidence that some of the 62,000 people sent to Australia came willingly, and signed contracts to work on the plantations, many others were lured or taken forcibly onto the boats. [...] While some of those contracted may not have understood what they were signing up for the first time they came to Australia, many returned multiple times by choice. By this time [1871–2], even in New Zealand, South Sea Islanders were being employed as laborers, some twenty-five of them working for an Auckland firm with interests in the flax trade. Following complaints, the details of the natives' conditions, contract, and treatment became the subject of correspondence between the governor and the Colonial Office. It transpired that the treatment of the natives was satisfactory, but they had been deceived as to the length of their contract, thus proving the 'necessity for legislation to prevent abuse'.
