LGBT Ireland is a national charitable organisation providing support services to people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex or non-binary (LGBTQI+) and their family members.

The organisation was established in 2010 when seven regional LGBT Helplines joined efforts to coordinate the provision of high-quality support and information throughout Ireland. Informed by the issues and experiences raised through our frontline services, we also undertake extensive training and advocacy work to enhance the visibility, inclusion and rights of LGBTQI+ people living in Ireland.

I’ll never forget that call. And it was just probably a really understanding parent that spoke to me for 30 minutes or 40 minutes and just let me be.

I know I wasn’t alone and that there was that nice, sympathetic, friendly air that was prepared to listen to me on the other end and not judge me.

So I decided to start volunteering on the trans family support line, because I personally got so much support from the trans family support line when I rang.

… if this is who they are and this is who they want to be, and they’re brave enough to be themselves, it’d be great if they had someone in their corner, you know?

You know what, LGBT Ireland, they didn’t give me just support. This is my hope. I can tell you, I feel like I have family.

LGBTQ folks right now need more support than ever, and to be able to play even a tiny role in that is just so important. And very meaningful to me.

…being around like minded people who have similar values and goals to myself, it’s definitely very rewarding. And, it feels like I am part of a community now.
