The conversations sparked during #UNOpenSourceWeek2026 continue to inspire new perspectives on building a more inclusive digital future! Confidence Osein, Founder of Internet Safe Kids Africa, took that conversation to the next level with her contribution to UN Open Source Community Day 2026: “Who Is Left Out? Designing Open Source for Real-World Digital Realities in Underserved Communities.” "For me, localization is not simply about adapting technology to a place. It is about understanding the people, conditions and realities that shape how technology is actually experienced," said Confidence Osein. From shared devices and language barriers to limited digital literacy and affordability, the realities of underserved communities remind us that access alone does not equal inclusion. Building on the momentum of #UNOpenSourceWeek, this work highlights the importance of embedding safety, usability, trust and local context into open-source design from the start. In order to advance digital inclusion, the communities we aim to serve are not left out of the technologies we build.

At the just-concluded 'Privacy Conference' #PrivCon2026, our Founder, Confidence Osein, joined the panel session “I’m Just a Baby: Children’s Privacy, Online Safety and Sundry Issues.” One of the key questions explored was: Are there realistic, privacy-respecting age verification mechanisms that don’t require collecting ID documents from children? There are privacy-respecting ways to establish age without requiring children to hand over identity documents. But age assurance is only one part of the wider online safety conversation. Knowing a child’s age does not, by itself, make a platform safe. Children also do not experience the internet in the same way. Improving their online safety and privacy therefore requires looking beyond individual users and safety features to how platforms themselves are designed and how those designs can create or amplify harm. Age alone cannot capture every child’s needs and experiences. Policies and protections need to reflect those differences. This is why children’s perspectives matter in shaping the policies and protections intended to keep them safe. At Internet Safe Kids Africa, we see children as more than people who need protection. They are rights holders, with their own interests, freedoms and voices. Their perspectives should have a meaningful place in shaping the policies and digital environments that affect them. #iSafeKidsAfrica Raising Safe And Responsible Digital Citizens #PrivCon2026 #privacy #childonlinesafety #onlinesafety #digitalrights #chilldrights #internetsafekidsafrica

Far too little attention is paid to the #privacy and #security practices of digital platforms that collect and process the personal data of millions of African children. As children spend more time online, it is increasingly important for governments, regulators, technology companies, educators, parents, and civil society to engage in open conversations that lead to practical solutions for strengthening children's privacy and online safety across #Africa. As part of this important conversation on the state of children's privacy in Africa, our Founder, Confidence Osein, alongside leading experts will be speaking on the #PrivacyDialogueSeries by Privacy Hub Africa on the topic "Children's Data and Digital Platforms in Africa: Obligations, Gaps and Safeguards." The discussion will explore the responsibilities of digital platforms, the existing gaps, and the safeguards needed to better protect African children's data and digital rights.
