  • At MHPSS Academy, we agree with the insights in the post below by Cloe Clayton on the newly published MHPSS Capacity Strengthening Framework by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement Hub. The framework's emphasis on community-centred design, holistic strengthening, and long-term commitment aligns closely with our organisation’s values and approach to Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS). #MHPSS #MentalHealth #PsychosocialSupport #CommunityCentered #CapacityStrengthening #DoNoHarm #SustainableDevelopment #GlobalHealth #Humanitarian #RCRC #SocialChange #PublicHealth #InclusivePractices #ICRC #RedCrossRedCrescent #MHPSSFramework

I've just come out of a webinar on the new MHPSS Capacity Strengthening Framework, newly published by the ICRC and the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement MHPSS Hub: https://lnkd.in/gJVkGbBa It's written for the RCRC Movement, but much of it is relevant for anyone implementing Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) activities - it provides helpful guidance for many of the issues I see time and time again in my work as an MHPSS trainer and evaluator. A few key takeaways: 🔹 The (ever-evolving) MHPSS needs of communities sit at the centre of it all. Strengthening capacity isn’t an end in itself - we work to meet real needs on the ground, and those are the reference point for every design decision. 🔹 Training alone rarely changes practice. Capacity strengthening goes far beyond training. Without supervision, mentoring, and chances to practise, people struggle to apply new skills safely. Doing (training/capacity) needs assessments and clearly identifying intended changes, together with the people who will make use of new skills, is essential. 🔹 Workforce, organisational, and system capacity are interdependent, and strengthening one in isolation risks creating gaps and undermining sustainability. Individual skill-building needs an organisation that supervises and supports it; that, in turn, needs a system with the policies and referral pathways to sustain it. 🔹 It's a long-term endeavour, not a project-cycle deliverable. Organisational and system change in particular take time, and need to be planned for from the outset. 🔹 Do no harm and cultural adaptation aren't afterthoughts. Externally imported content, however technically sound, can remain unused, or become unhelpful or even harmful, if it ignores local realities and power dynamics. There's also a super useful dos and don'ts table on page 14, covering common pitfalls in embedding capacity strengthening - worth a look. As the Framework notes, ”Ultimately, capacity strengthening is a process of mutual exchange and change in knowledge and attitudes. Its goal is transforming MHPSS practice, rather than simply transferring technical knowledge." Would love to hear your thoughts! I'm always up for a nerdy MHPSS chat. Comment away or send me a message :) #MHPSS #CapacityStrengthening
