Wingspan is a competitive, medium-weight, card-driven, engine-building board game from designer Elizabeth Hargrave and Stonemaier Games. It is the 2019 winner of the prestigious Kennerspiel des Jahres award.
You are bird enthusiasts—researchers, bird watchers, ornithologists, and collectors—seeking to discover and attract the best birds to your network of wildlife preserves. Each bird extends a chain of powerful combinations in one of your habitats (actions). These habitats focus on several key aspects of growth:
- Gain food tokens via custom dice in a birdfeeder dice tower
- Lay eggs using egg miniatures in a variety of colors
- Draw from hundreds of unique bird cards and play them
The winner is the player with the most points after 4 rounds.

Name updates to birds (November 2023 and beyond)
The American Ornithological Society’s announced that some birds names will officially change so that no birds are named after people and that no names that are deemed offensive or exclusionary (e.g., to indigenous people and various cultures). This process will start with North American birds and will eventually apply to birds worldwide (for their English names). Stonemaier Games supports this effort.
As for the impact on Wingspan, we’re discussing how to proceed. We prefer to use the official names for birds, and we love the idea of celebrating birds for their unique qualities, traits, and habitats (opposed to any implied ownership or ties to a person). Given that these names are officially changing, when the AOS finalizes their name selections for sets released so far, it’s likely that we’ll make a pack of the renamed birds and offer them on our webstore. At that time we will also likely change the names of those birds in the game, rendering the historian bonus card an artifact of the past.
This isn’t a matter of erasing the past or pretending that some of it never happened–the past isn’t changing. Rather, it’s using the information we have in the present to not celebrate or honor those who committed atrocious acts in the past and to simply not be derogatory to various cultures. (Note that this is a general commentary that does not apply to all birds named after people–per the article, there are a variety of reasons that the names of people are being separated from the names of the birds, and by making a universal change, it avoids subjectivity.)

With the reprinted cardboards available with the hummingbirds are you thinking of redoing the rubber mats too? Do we need to replace the current player mats in the nesting box or will the news ones fix as well? PS. Love the options the hummingbirds bring 😁
Since we already sell (and have sold tens of thousands of) rubber playmats, we will only offer cardboard versions of the alternate art mats. The Nesting Box is designed to fit 2 full sets of cardboard mats and some rubber mats too.
Hi Jamey,
Will the Wingspan Americas Flock Mode Pack that was just announced today be coming to retail hobby shops and/or PAX Unplugged?
I don’t know about PAX Unplugged, but we are happy to sell it to retailers upon request.
What is the “Wingspan Americas Flock Mode Pack” that was mentioned in the Stonemaier Champion Update that was just sent?
It allows you to play with Wingspan Americas’ hummingbirds using the flock mode (6-7 player games) found in Wingspan Asia.
The new patch broke the game on Nintendo Switch. Now when you press up on the D pad to look at a bird there is no way to put it back down since down on the D pad now shows that new tray instead of putting the bird back down. Once you look at a bird you are stuck and can’t complete your move. Please fix ASAP! We have played over 2000 games on Switch and now can’t!
We don’t publish Wingspan Digital–we make the tabletop game. If you find any bugs in the digital version of Wingspan, please send them to support@monstercouch.com or the Wingspan Discord server, where they have a bug reporting channel (https://discord.gg/wingspan).
Thank you!
Will the Wingspan Promo Packs include the same birds that the Steam digital promo packs have?
The Steam packs are based on the printed promo packs, so yes. :)
Question on how the ‘if the draw deck gets exhausted, immediately shuffle the discard pile and continue play’ interacts with the fan pack Asian Great Eared Nightjar (draw until you draw a non forest bird. Discard all cards and cache a worm for each forest bird drawn’. In the edge case where all birds in the draw and discard pile can be played in the forest, when does the turn end?
I think it would end when there are no more cards to draw. Has that happened?
James, I have replicated this in the Steam online version (under artificial circumstances). Basically created a 5 person game, controlling all players.
Started with OE/EE/Fan-based Asian (OE player mat).
During initial selection, keep all Grassland/Wetlands/Grassland+Wetland birds + enough food to play a wetland bird first round (any goal).
R1T1, play a wetland bird – focusing on a bird that grants food for all players, extra card draws (no discards).
R1T2-7, cycle through the deck as quickly as one can – if the tray has all 3 forest, use a food to discard them to gain 3 fresh birds. Pick any non-forest birds out of the tray and then the deck.
R1T8, around the 3rd player, set up the tray to be all forest for the refresh R2.
If the GENj pops up, snag it and play it.
Around R2T3, all 201 cards have been sorted through. It is just a matter of focusing on activating GENj (all other players, discard a forest bird in the gain food action.
End result: 1308 (9 points birds [5+4]; 22 end of round goals; 2 points bonus; 5 points nectar (1st forest); 1270 cached worms).
Hi Jamie! I’m a Wingspan fan from Japan. I recently checked my old score sheets and found that I’ve played at least 875 games of Wingspan so far. That’s probably over 1,500 hours of playtime! I know 1,000 games would be a nicer number to report, but I couldn’t wait another 125 games to tell you. 😂 Wingspan has truly become a part of my life. Thank you for making such a wonderful game!
My partner and I love spending as much time as possible with this wonderful game, so we always play with the Round 1 goal tile set to “No Goal.”
And the new expansion is fantastic too. The hummingbirds are adorable, and their mechanics are such a perfect representation of how hummingbirds actually behave. It’s beautiful game design!
(This comment was translated with the help of AI, so the English might be a bit unnatural, but I wanted to express my gratitude.)
Thanks for your comment, Hiro! I’m so glad you continue to enjoy Wingspan after so many plays. :)
