We welcome the publication of the findings from the independent review into mental health, ADHD and autism. While the review focuses specifically on ADHD and autism, many of its findings and recommendations are equally relevant to dyslexic people. There is a clear need for better population-level data on dyslexia, alongside greater investment in and integration of mental health and neurodevelopmental services that recognise the needs of dyslexic people. If we are to ensure that everyone with a neurodevelopmental condition receives the right support at the right time, based on their individual needs, dyslexia must be recognised in the Government’s forthcoming mental health strategy, alongside ADHD and autism. Dyslexia is probably already part of your workplace. Around 1 in 10 people in the UK are dyslexic. That could be your colleague, your employee, your customer or someone applying for their first job. But being dyslexic should not mean facing unnecessary barriers at work or in everyday life. Businesses have an important role to play in changing this. You could choose the British Dyslexia Association as your Charity of the Year, bring your team together through fundraising or take practical steps towards creating a more inclusive workplace. It does not have to start with something big. Sometimes, it starts with understanding dyslexia and asking what you can do differently. By working with the BDA, your organisation can help raise awareness, remove barriers and help more dyslexic people reach their full potential. Could your business be part of the change? As demand for special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) support continues to grow, councils face increasing financial pressures - with significant implications for services, children and young people, and their families. We support the County Councils Network's call for a sustainable, properly funded system that enables local authorities to plan for the future and ensures children and young people get the support they need.
