Our lives. Our planet.

About us

Global Action Plan mobilises people and organisations to take action on the systems that harm us and our planet. We are an environmental charity working towards a green and thriving planet where everyone can enjoy happy and healthy lives within the Earth’s limits.  We tackle the root causes of our climate and nature crises through research, campaigns and collective action.  We focus on issues where the connection between the health of people and our planet is most tangible. This allows us to show the interrelationship and drive solutions that prioritise wellbeing for all.  Our current focus issues are air pollution, excessive consumption and the education system.

  • Clean Air Night is moving to the 17th of November! As the nights grow colder and people start heating their homes, we’re calling on health and air quality organisations to help raise awareness about the health harms of wood burning. Wood burning is the most polluting way to heat your home. The smoke produces particulate air pollution (PM2.5), which enters your bloodstream when inhaled and can cause heart and lung disease, as well as increasing your risk of diabetes and dementia. Cutting unnecessary burning in urban areas could save 1,500 lives a year and save our NHS over £54 million in costs. If your organisation works in health or air quality, join us this Clean Air Night and help shine a light on the uncomfortable truth of wood burning. Sign up to our newsletter to receive the Clean Air Night comms pack in the coming weeks, which will be packed with messaging and assets you can use to help communities understand how to protect their health, and the health of their family and neighbours.

  • Yesterday Ian Lavery MP asked Prime Minister Andy Burnham if he'll support a moratorium on new data centres and if he'd visit impacted communities. While the PM's response was certainly lacking, this is still a major moment for our campaign to #StopDirtyDataCentres. Communities across the UK have been fighting to have their concerns about AI data centres heard but are being drowned out by Big Tech lobbyists who hold the ear of government. Join us in calling on the Government for a moratorium on new data centres and add your name to our petition. Link in comments.

Perhaps what's most telling about this magnificent truth-bomb research from James Meadway is how aggressively the govt have come out swinging in response. When the Green party called for a data centre moratorium the government said such a thing would be a "disaster for jobs", a claim that seems entirely based on the tech lobby's finger in the air figures. So James has taken a look rather more forensically and - what do you know - they don't come close to stacking up. https://lnkd.in/en5JVpJj

With the consultation on the new natural history GCSE content closing tomorrow, our team at Global Action Plan has submitted key recommendations through the Department for Education's consultation process. We’re recommending that the GCSE gives young people the confidence to contribute to nature recovery in their own communities, while understanding how local issues connect to national and global systems and challenges. We’re also highlighting the need for: 🌿Human-nature connectedness as a core subject aim 🌿Understanding of ecological decline, including the UK’s nature depletion, the factors shaping it and the individual and collective agency young people have as citizens to support nature recovery 🌿Greater focus on societal responses to environmental change, including climate adaptation 🌿Support to ensure equitable access to the qualification, including teacher training 🌿Guidance on high-quality fieldwork that prioritises frequent, rich experiences in nature for all students 🌿Diverse perspectives and case studies throughout the GCSE, ensuring students encounter contributors to natural history from a wide range of cultures, backgrounds, genders and communities We’re pleased to see the GCSE taking shape and hope it’s designed in a way that gives as many young people as possible the opportunity to take part. You can read our full submission (and find guidance on completing your own) on our website (link in comments!) What would you add to our list of recommendations? Comment below ⬇️

It's a simple question but one the govt couldn't - or wouldn't - answer when we asked. What are all these data centres going to be used for? It matters what our power and water resources will be sacrificed for. If it's lying chatbots, porn, deepfakes and foreign militaries, well that's slightly different to the cancer-cracking, climate-fixing, jobs & growth-boosting tech the industry are so keen to talk up. It's one of the many reasons we need a moratorium on new data centres. No government should be green-lighting infrastructure at this scale if they can't tell citizens what it's for.

95% of young people value protecting the environment, so why do young people so often feel like the people around them don’t? We conducted a study with the University of Bath across more than 1000 young people aged 12-24.  While 95% of participants said that values like protecting the environment are highly important to them, 77% believed they personally value protecting the environment more highly than their peers do.     When young people underestimate the values of those around them, they can feel isolated, less hopeful about the future of the planet and less likely to act on the issues they care about.  But, when young people recognise how much they actually have in common, it can strengthen connection, build hope, and encourage action. Claire Arnott, our Head of Education said, "In a world that can feel increasingly fragmented and polarised, it’s never been so important to nurture social connectedness and, subsequently, collective action." To learn more about helping young people recognise their shared values, sign up to our newsletter and check out our lesson resource pack via the links in the comments.

The time to act is now. Our Too Poor to Be Sick report shows that, across the UK, too many workers are having to choose between their health and their livelihood – due to discrimination at work, insufficient workplace adjustments, and a lack of accountability when employers fail to provide appropriate support. Employees from Black, Asian, and minoritised ethnic backgrounds are disproportionately likely to experience these workplace inequalities. That's why we’re calling on policymakers and employers to act on the evidence and recommendations in the Too Poor to Be Sick report. We need meaningful action to tackle racial inequalities in the workplace and make work healthier and fairer for everyone. Find out more about the Too Poor to Be Sick report, produced in collaboration with Health Equals, and join the call for change: https://lnkd.in/eU6UixwS #TooPoorToBeSick #RaceEquality #HealthInequalities
