Ahead of #WorldMentalHealthDay today, we asked young people from our Lived Experience Advisory Panel (LEAP) how adults can support them to look after their mental health online. Here’s what they told us. Learn more about talking to children and young people about their online experiences and mental health - visit https://lnkd.in/eNRg5T4z
Molly Rose Foundation
Non-profit Organizations
Helping young people live long & stay strong through online safety, suicide prevention & mental health support
About us
We lose one young person to suicide where technology plays a role every week in the UK. It’s our belief that suicide is preventable with the right education in place together with better regulation and policy change. Live Long and Stay Strong were words written by Molly Russell in the weeks before her death that have become the cornerstone of everything Molly Rose Foundation does today. We influence policy makers, raise the voice of lived experience and deliver education and support to reduce preventable suicide and address online harm.

Oz lost her daughter Aimee in 2022. Four years later, the forum which groomed her to take her life remains accessible and people are continuing to die. Molly Rose Foundation has linked this forum to at least 164 UK deaths - with the youngest being just 14 years old. Despite this, Ofcom claim that they have come to the end of their powers under the Online Safety Act. They have taken 400 days to make this decision and impose a fine that will never be paid. In the mean time, at least three further families in the UK have lost their loved ones too. Andy Burnham - please meet with these incredible families who have experienced the worst of the worst and are working tirelessly to prevent other families from losing their loved ones too. Please grant them the public inquiry they deserve. Please stop the forum that will lead to many more deaths. We’re here to hold tech companies accountable and help you protect your children. That’s why we’re partnering with Pearl & Dean to bring Molly Rose Foundation’s powerful message to cinema audiences watching The Social Reckoning in the UK from today. The film depicts the true story of how a Facebook whistleblower and Wall Street Journal reporter worked together to expose Facebook’s harmful practices in 2021. Five years later, and nine years after the death of Molly Russell, we are still fighting for social media that is safe by design. Incredible news to share. Molly Rose Foundation will have a cinema ad airing before screenings of The Social Reckoning from tomorrow, thanks to Pearl & Dean. The ad features Ian Russell discussing how nine years after Molly's death, little has changed. Advertisers, legislators, regulators and all of us have a role to play in changing this. Huge thank you to Kathryn Jacob OBE and Ian McNaught for the opportunity to highlight our work holding Meta to account for the harm still prevailing on their platforms. We've also paired with Bauer Media Group to showcase our support for parents and families with some radio advertising. Thanks go to Simon Kilby for this brilliant opportunity to highlight the fantastic resources which Kate Edwards team have created. Been great to work with Jo Neale to bring this to life. We’ve joined up with Internet Matters and 70 expert individuals and organisations to call on the Government to make children’s media literacy a national priority. With ongoing curriculum reform and new plans for online safety, the new Government currently has a unique opportunity to deliver an ambitious reset of media literacy. It’s time to equip a generation of young people with the skills they need to stay safe, think critically, and thrive in a digital world. Get this right and we can not only protect young people from online harm, but deliver on urgent priorities for economic growth, democracy and national security. Strengthened media literacy is particularly vital in the context of the upcoming social media ban – helping to protect children wherever they spend time online, while also mitigating the unintended consequences of a ban. Yesterday our CEO Andy Burrows shared Molly's story with an audience at Nordic TV Day. It comes as Ofcom open an investigation into Meta, a sign of progress but it's crucial they also look at the harm being caused by features and products across the company. Regulators, advertisers and Governments have a role to play in standing up to online harm.
A privilege to share Molly’s story with over 700 broadcasters, streamers, advertisers and agencies from across the Nordics at yesterday’s inaugural Nordic TV Day in Stockholm, hosted by the brilliant team at TV4. There are many good commercial push and pull factors why advertisers should be directing spend away from social media, but when Molly Rose Foundation shows 1 in 2 girls see suicide, self-harm, eating disorder and depression content on big platforms every week, brand safety and good corporate citizenship must count for something too. And as we heard from Nils Fredrik Wisløff-Høgestøl, moving away from Meta doesn’t mean a hit to the bottom line. The Nordics are proving to be an exemplar in tech accountability, as this year’s decision to expel Meta from IAB Sverige shows. Yesterday showed there’s also a real determination from Nordic broadcasters to create a compelling alternative to opaque spend on social media platforms, an outcome that can only be good for child safety, our democracy, and our Nordic and European values. Huge thanks to Justin Lebbon Camilla von Otter Maria Käcke for making it happen.

TW: Suicide Last month, a group of bereaved families and a survivor wrote to the Prime Minister, with support from Molly Rose Foundation, to demand a public inquiry into the State’s repeated failure to stop a global suicide grooming forum linked to at least 164 UK deaths and counting. When criminal Kenneth Law returned to the Canadian courts in September, families shared their experiences of why a public inquiry is urgently needed. We support their view that lessons must urgently be learned in order to stop more lives being lost to this preventable harm. We want to thank everyone involved for their bravery and insight. Last week our Chair and Molly’s dad, Ian Russell, spoke at the UN General Assembly in New York. The sessions examined how the global information ecosystem is at a crisis point with children and young people among those most connected and most at risk. Ian shared Molly’s story and the learnings Molly Rose Foundation has gained since then as part of the discussion around making our information ecosystem safe and reliable for future generations, and why young people themselves must be part of building the solution. The sessions also examined the role advertising plays in fuelling harm online. Natalie Shoup

We were at #LabourConference yesterday where we heard from experts about the next steps for online safety, as the Government plans its social media ban. Secretary of State Lisa Nandy MP joined our panel, setting out her vision for the ban and how it could incentivise companies to make their products safe. Our Chief Executive Andy Burrows welcomed the Government’s interventionist approach and said it’s crucial the ban is designed smartly to mitigate safeguarding risks and ensure a safety-by-design approach to regulation. Watch our video featuring Maeve Walsh FRSA, Ian Murray, Rachel Talbot and Sophie Huskisson to find out more. #OnlineSafety #LabourConference #OnlineSafetyAct #SafetyByDesign #MollyRoseFoundation

The social media ban shouldn't be the end point for children's online safety. Lisa Nandy MP, Secretary of State, spoke Molly Rose Foundation’s Labour Conference event today, sharing her ambitions for Government to deliver a faster, more interventionist approach She said it was a sign of failure that we’ve reached this point and we can expect a different approach from this Government. We look forward to seeing what she will achieve with her new brief as Digital Secretary.
