The Centre held its annual Edinburgh International Arbitration Festival (#ArbFest2026) on the 3 and 4 September. Bringing practitioners, experts, lawyers, arbitrators from across the world to Edinburgh. We had a fantastic line up of Performers, with two Headliners and four panels, discussing topics arbitration in the era of energy transition and choosing the right path to resolve disputes, as mediation becomes more international. We are very thankful for all to our Performers, Festivalgoers and sponsors, who have helped us deliver another excellent #ArbFest2026. This week we welcome a delegation from Nigeria, including judges from the country, for a week or training on arbitration and mediation. We have developed a packed programme, covering various aspects of arbitration and mediation. We will also look at seats of arbitration, starting with Scotland, and institutional arbitration and mediation. Today, Lord (Angus) Glennie, Director of the Centre, delivered a session on Scottish arbitration and the Arbitration (Scotland) Act 2010, where he discussed the arbitration system in Scotland. The delegation enjoyed an interesting discussion with Angus, including comparisons with the system in Nigeria.

We are delighted to announce that we have entered into a cooperation agreement with the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) to advance international dispute resolution. We will cooperate to promote and disseminate knowledge of arbitration, conciliation, mediation, and other alternative methods of dispute resolution, and to share hearing and meetings facilities and services. The agreement was signed by Gillian Carmichael Lemaire, Chair of the Board of SAC, and Martina Polasek, Secretary-General of ICSID. Frauke Nitschke represented ICSID at a ceremony in Edinburgh during #ArbFest2026. She’s pictured here with Andrew Mackenzie and Gillian Carmichael Lemaire.
