What can a mark just a few millimetres wide tell us about a piece of silverware? First introduced as part of England’s statutory hallmarking system in 1300, the Leopard’s Head has a history spanning more than seven centuries. Today, it remains one of the most recognisable symbols in British hallmarking, identifying precious metalwork assayed at the London Assay Office. Its story is closely connected to The Goldsmiths' Company, which received its first Royal Charter in 1327, helping to establish the foundations of the trade and its enduring standards of accountability. For Thomas Lyte, it represents a meaningful connection between the silverware we create in our London workshops today and the enduring heritage of British goldsmithing and silversmithing. But why a leopard? How has the mark evolved over the centuries, and what does it tell us about the piece it identifies? Explore the history and significance of the Leopard’s Head in our latest journal. Link in the comments below. #TheLeopardsHead #BritishHallmarking #TheHistoryOfHallmarking

A new symbol for a historic rivalry. Designed by Arnaud Chastaingt, Director of the CHANEL Watch Creation Studio and handcrafted by Thomas Lyte, the new J12 Boat Race trophies were unveiled at The Presidents’ Challenge on the 30th September. Created for the Men’s and Women’s races, the trophies bring the distinctive character of the iconic J12 into the world of sporting silverware. A bold contemporary frame surrounds a classically designed silver cup, bringing together CHANEL’s distinctive design language with the traditions of one of the world’s most contested rivalries. The trophies combine traditional goldsmithing and silversmithing with modern technology and technical precision, bringing sterling silver, ceramic-coated aluminium and 24-carat gold plating together within a single composition. The commission marks the centenary of the first Women’s Race in 1927, and the first sporting trophies ever created by CHANEL. A true meeting of two areas of specialist expertise: CHANEL’s world-renowned design and Thomas Lyte’s experience in crafting bespoke silverware. The Boat Race Company | CHANEL #CHANELJ12BoatRace

The J12 Boat Race trophies: A triumph of exceptional savoir-faire. As part of the partnership with The Boat Race, the legendary rowing competition for which CHANEL J12 serves as the first Title Sponsor and Official Timekeeper, and to mark the Centenary of the women’s race, Arnaud Chastaingt, Director of the CHANEL Watch Creation Studio, has designed two trophies for the very first time, crafted within the prestigious British fine silver workshops of Thomas Lyte. From modeling to final assembly, including shaping the forms, polishing, gold plating and engraving, every stage in the creation of the J12 Boat Race trophies preserves the excellence of exceptional savoir-faire. The highlight of these creations is the integration of a black or white frame that echoes the hue of the J12 watch’s ceramic, a technical feat as delicate as it is unprecedented. A new stage for professional dance with a new piece of silverware. The IDL international dance league brought professional dance together in a new global competition, uniting six dance teams on one stage. To mark this new chapter for the sport, Thomas Lyte was commissioned to design and make the official IDL trophy, translating the identity of the league and its founding organisations into a piece of silverware. At its centre, six pillars represent the six founding organisations. Rising together, they elevate the IDL stage, with the IDL logo forming its centrepiece. Around the base, the flags of the founding organisations run across alternate surfaces, bringing each identity into the trophy while revealing new details from every angle. After 6 rounds that brought professional dance to a global stage, the trophy now represents the achievement of the first IDL champion. Congratulations to GRV Dance.🏆 A new competition. A new champion. A new piece of dance history made. #InternationalDanceLeague #ThomasLyte #MadeForThisMoment

The inaugural Barclays Knight-Stokes Cup Final organised by the MCC Foundation and Marylebone Cricket Club was a special day for cricket.🏏 As designers and makers of the Barclays Knight-Stokes Cup, Thomas Lyte was proud to be at Lord’s to support the finalists and see the trophies we designed and crafted take centre stage. Altrincham Grammar School beat John Hampden Grammar School by six wickets in the boys’ final, while Chelmsford County High School won the girls’ final by eight wickets against Penistone Grammar School. But beyond the results, all four finalists showed exactly why this competition matters: giving young people from state schools across the UK the opportunity to play, compete and showcase their talent on one of cricket’s biggest stages. With 1,100 state school teams taking part, the inaugural competition has created a platform for the next generation of cricketers to shine. We’re proud to have played a part in celebrating that talent and supporting a competition that puts opportunity at the heart of the game. #BarclaysKnightStokesCup #LordsCricketGround #ThomasLyte #FutureOfCricket #InspiringTheNextGeneration

The future of cricket starts with opportunity. The Barclays Knight-Stokes Cup, designed and crafted by Thomas Lyte, will be presented at the inaugural final of a competition designed to inspire the next generation of cricketers. The competition, organised by the MCC Foundation and Marylebone Cricket Club has given young people educated at state secondary schools the opportunity to play, learn and develop their skills in cricket. At Thomas Lyte, we believe the same principle applies to craft. Whether it is on the cricket field or in the workshop, talent needs opportunity to grow. We look forward to celebrating the next generation of cricketers as they take to the field for the final on 10th September. #behindthecraft #thomaslyte #mccfoundation #thenextgenerationofcricket

What does it take to build a career in traditional craftsmanship? Sometimes, it starts with the opportunity to step inside a world-class trophy maker and Royal Warrant holder’s workshop and see it for yourself. Across two insight days, we welcomed students from The Creative Dimension Trust into our London workshop for a behind-the-scenes introduction to the world of Thomas Lyte. From discovering silversmithing and polishing to designing and making their own etched key rings, the students experienced the craft first-hand and heard directly from those building careers within it. For our final-year apprentice Idris Tetlow, the days were particularly meaningful. Having first discovered craft through The Creative Dimension Trust himself, he was now sharing his own journey with the next generation. Discover more about the insight days and our commitment to supporting the future of craftsmanship in our latest journal.
