Pokémon of the Day

Do Silver Pokémons dream of electric sheep?

December 20, 1999

Mondays are special days indeed for Pokémen and women -- every Monday, IGNpocket will be sneaking into this country and (onto our web site) one of the brand new Pokémons from the Japanese Silver and Gold Pokémon games. You won't be able to catch these newest Pokécritters until the games' release in September, 2000, so this is your only chance to get your Pokédose of Pokémania for almost a year. There are 100 new Pokémons total, so keep coming back to IGNpocket to catch them all!

Once you learn all about this Pokémon, head on over to our Contest page where you must answer one question about this Pokémon. Get the answer right, and you'll be entered to win the Pokémon prize of that day. But to win, you'll have to register – it's a painless process, and well worth the three minutes of your time.

Now, on to today's Pokémon of the Day:

Meripu (#179)

Image Pronunciation:
MEH-REEP
(The 'U' is silent)

Element
Electric

Type
Normal

Height
2' 0"

Weight
17 lbs.

Techniques
Electric Shock

Do Silver Pokémons dream of electric sheep?

IGNpocket: You're in a desert, walking along when...
Peer Schneider, IGN Editorial Manager: What one?
IGNpocket: What?
Peer: What desert?
IGNpocket: Doesn't matter what desert it is, it's completely hypothetical. Let's say somewhere outside the Indigo Plateau.
Peer: Well, how come I'd be there?
IGNpocket: Maybe you're fed up. Maybe you just wanted to get away from all those crazy IGNPC guys.
Peer: Makes sense.
IGNpocket: Anyway. You're in a desert, walking along when you look down and you see a Squirtle, Peer. It's crawling toward you.
Peer: What's a Squirtle?
IGNpocket: You know what a Wartortle is?
Peer: Of course.
IGNpocket: Same thing, just not as evolved. So you reach down and flip the Squirtle over on its back to tickle it, Peer.
Peer: Do you make up these questions, Mr. IGNpocket? Or does Nintendo write them down for you?
IGNpocket: The Squirtle lays on its back, it's sad little eyes making him look so adorable, beating his squat little legs, squirting his water gun, making cuddly noises. But you don't think the Squirtle is cute.
Peer: WHAT DO YOU MEAN I DON'T THINK IT'S CUTE? IT'S A POKÉMON!!!
IGNpocket: I mean you don't think it's cute, Peer. Why is that?

IGNpocket asked the right questions to the wrong man. That's where I come in. When one of these replicants goes rogue, they don't advertise for Pokémon collectors in the newspaper. That was my profession. Ex-trainer. Ex-breeder. Ex-Pokémon master.

Mr. Peer failed the Voight-Kampff test. So they sent me out to retire him, to get him into a Poké Ball, stash that thing where nobody would ever find it again, and erase this wild Peer off the Pokédex forever. Pokémon are like any other pocket monster- - they're either cute and lovable allies of Professor Oak or evil, mean Team Rocket meanies. If they're a cute, it's not my problem. Peer ain't cute.

When I dream, I see Meripu dancing over my head. Electric shocks flow through their bodies, burning with the fires of Orc. They're like wooly Pikachu on the plains, gnawing on cabbage. In theory, if you lead one to water, it will still not drink, for fear of its own electric body... maybe they know that the light that burns twice as bright burns half as long. In my dreams, I can see Meripu evolving into Mokoko near the Tannhauser gate, gleefully baa'ing like tears in the rain.

I don't know why Peer hired me for this job; maybe in those last moments of sanity he loved life more than he had ever before. Or maybe he was just driven crazy by Captain Insano. No matter. They say "Nothing is worse than having an itch you can never scratch." But just try living life with only the name "Intern" as your identity.

--Intern.

NOTE: The name of this Pokémon will likely change when the Silver and Gold Pokémon Game Boy Color games are translated and brought over. Names of Pokémons are plays on words (both in Japan and the US), so expect the names to be witty and charismatic translations of the Japanese names.

Now that you've gotten your Pokélesson and you are a Pokéscholar, take this info over to our Pokémon Contest and enter yourself for a chance to win some great Poképrizes. Get the answer right, and you may win yourself the Pokémon Prize Pack -- A Special Edition Pokémon Game Boy Color system, a copy of every Game Boy Pokémon game available in the US (including Pokémon Yellow, Red, Blue, and Pinball), and Official Trainers Manual and Field Guides for Pokémon Yellow, Blue, and Red. It's a super Pokéfreak-out! So take the Pokéchallenge, and put some Poké in your pocket!

If you haven't registered, get your butt over to our Registration page and put all the pertinent information so you get in on the goods.
