College Graduates who Change the World

About us

10,000 Degrees is the leading, equity-focused scholarship provider and college success nonprofit in California. Our mission is to achieve educational equity and to support students from low-income backgrounds to and through college—and beyond—to realize their full potential and positively impact their communities and the world. We support 12,000+ high school and college students annually. 100% come from low-income backgrounds, 93% are Black, Indigenous, Latine & people of color, and 92% are the first in their family to attend college. We connect students with recently graduated, near-peer Fellows, who share lived experiences and provide deep content expertise, resources, and 1:1 support. Our strong community college program provides broad transfer support. Our wraparound support is customized to meet the needs of students, schools, and communities. Our alumni are transforming the world as doctors, lawyers, educators, social activists, entrepreneurs, and more. Many come full circle as 10,000 Degrees Fellows, employers and internship providers, and volunteers and mentors through our Career Success program.

Inspired and re-energized after speaking at the Undocumented Student Success Summit! 🌟 It was a privilege to share the stage alongside dedicated partners from Immigrants Rising, Southern California College Attainment Network (SoCal CAN) (Southern California College Attainment Network), EdTrust-West the Foundation for California Community Colleges, and the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office. It was a powerful reminder of what collective action can achieve. Together, we reflected on 25 years of AB 540 and redefined what student success looks like today—moving beyond access and enrollment to fostering a deep sense of belonging, wraparound mentorship, and career readiness. 25 years ago, many of our students navigated their education in the shadows; today, there is a vibrant and powerful network of support opening doors of opportunity. A true highlight was watching 10,000 Degrees alumna Ariana Aparicio Aguilar, Ph.D. present her research and leadership. Seeing our scholars come full circle—from navigating these complex systems to leading and guiding the next generation—is the heart of why we do this work. (And on a fun note... I somehow walked away as the conference-wide Rock-Paper-Scissors champion! ✂️🪨📄) This 25th anniversary is a celebration, but also a call to action. We cannot look away or stop insisting that all students have access to the full spectrum of educational and career opportunities. Side-by-side with our partners, 10,000 Degrees remains deeply committed to breaking down systemic barriers so our undocumented students can persist, graduate, and thrive. #UndocumentedStudentSuccess #AB540 #HigherEducation #10000Degrees #EducationalEquity #ImmigrantsRising #SoCalCan #EdTrustWest

  • Transformative news for our local community and beyond! 🌟 With the support of our dedicated supporters, alumni, and Marin school partners, 10,000 Degrees is rolling out our new strategic plan backed by a historic $42 million donation from MacKenzie Scott. Strong local school partnerships and community support allow us to meet students right where they are, providing the guidance, mentorship, and financial assistance needed to make higher education a reality. "Even here in Marin, one of the wealthiest counties in the country, too many students lack the financial resources and guidance to pursue a college degree. We can change that. To date, we’ve already awarded 29% more scholarships to Marin students compared to last year." — Kim Mazzuca (she/her/hers), our President & CEO Together with our local school districts, educators, and generous supporters, we are deepening our footprint in Marin and accelerating degree completion for more first-generation students. Thank you to every supporter, educator, and community partner helping us bridge the gap and drive equity in education! 📰 Read the full coverage in the Marin Independent Journal: https://lnkd.in/gZHcTjcw

  • Honored to see our work featured in Inside Higher Ed! 🌟 Transformational support like this helps us accelerate our goal to double our reach and close completion gaps. Thank you for amplifying our mission!

My latest for Inside Higher Ed: An unrestricted $42 million gift from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott and Yield Giving is helping 10,000 Degrees, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting students from low-income backgrounds, significantly expand its reach and help more students earn diplomas. The donation, the largest in the organization’s history, will fund efforts outlined in a new five-year strategic plan aimed at expanding into new communities, doubling the annual number of college students supported from 5,000 to 10,000 and improving college completion and career outcomes by 2031. The nonprofit also aims to raise the four-year community college transfer rate from 44 percent to 60 percent and the six-year bachelor’s degree attainment rate among transfer students from 53 percent to 70 percent. Kim Mazzuca (she/her/hers), president and chief executive officer of 10,000 Degrees, said the gift does not change the organization’s strategic direction or priorities but instead allows it to make up-front investments to accelerate existing initiatives. “We need more students to move through their education and land meaningful careers so they can go back into their communities and make positive change,” Mazzuca said. “So much weighs on education. That is the most important lever that we can pull right now, and Mackenzie Scott knew that, so we are going to make the absolute most of her gift and this strategic plan.” #StudentSuccess #CollegeCompletion #Philanthropy #EducationalEquity https://lnkd.in/e48AjrtN

A couple of months ago, I transitioned into a new role as Fellowship Experience Manager at 10,000 Degrees!  In my time as a Lead Advisor and later Program Manager, I discovered that just as meaningful to me as supporting students is supporting the people who support them. I’ve always loved helping students reach their goals, but it’s also been an incredible privilege to watch my team grow into amazing advisors and professionals. In this newly created position, I oversee the full Fellowship experience for all 29 Fellows working across our eight Bay Area counties and supporting students nationwide through our Access and Success teams. My role spans hiring, onboarding, professional development, career development, and creating opportunities for Fellows to build community and connections across the organization. I’m also building and strengthening the systems, resources, and programming that support Fellows throughout their Fellowship, while collaborating with leadership and teams across the organization to ensure they feel equipped to support students and prepared for their next career steps. This transition feels especially meaningful because, over the past year, I had the opportunity to co-lead our organization’s Fellowship Committee. Together with our amazing Fellows, we’ve strengthened feedback loops between Fellows and leadership, launched a Fellowship Committee newsletter, and created Fellow-requested programming, including a Former Fellow Career Panel and an All-Fellow Bonding Event. Since stepping into this role, I’ve already hired four Fellows, with the goal of filling all eight open positions by November 2. I’m also revamping our Fellow Onboarding experience, using direct feedback from Fellows to shape the programming, resources, and sessions all Fellows will receive during their first two months. I’m especially excited to develop a full year of professional development and career programming that supports our Fellows’ growth and helps them explore their futures. Many of our Fellows are first-generation college graduates and first-generation professionals, and I’m honored to help create an experience where they feel supported, equipped, and empowered to grow into the professionals they aspire to be. I’m also excited to continue growing as a leader, strengthening my skills in organizational strategy, systems-building, and talent development. I’m passionate about exploring how intentional professional development, strong systems, and supportive leadership can help both individuals and organizations thrive. Below are a few photos from our FIRST-EVER All-Fellow Kickoff! It was a special opportunity to share more about my journey and what inspires me about this work, connect with our incredible Fellows, and introduce the projects and programming I’ll be working on throughout the year. Here’s to supporting the people who support students! ❤️ #EducationalEquity #ProfessionalDevelopment #LeadershipDevelopment

  • For 46 years, 10,000 Degrees has empowered students from all backgrounds by providing the support and opportunity to succeed in higher education. With over 92,000 students reached and $123 million awarded in scholarships, the real impact lies in the human connection: having someone in your corner who believes in your potential before you even see it yourself. For first-generation students navigating higher education far from home, that belief changes everything. When we invest in young people, we don't just open doors to college—we open a lifetime of opportunity. • So proud of you! What an incredible full-circle moment—we’re so lucky to have you and the team representing 10,000 Degrees on the national stage. Thank you for your leadership and for sharing our impact with the NCAN community! 🎓✨

Reporting out from an incredible time at the National College Attainment Network (NCAN) Conference in Las Vegas! 🎲✨ This week was particularly special for me—it was my very first NCAN conference and my first time presenting at a major conference! It was such a rewarding experience representing 10,000 Degrees alongside leaders and advocates from across the country. There is also something particularly humbling about being a 10,000 Degrees alum and 24 years later presenting about our work and org impact at an education conference. Talk about a #fullcirclemoment. A few highlights: 🎤 My colleagues Jose Jimenez, Grace F., and I co-presented at the closed Executive Retreat on "Advisory Boards as Emerging Leaders: The Engine for Scaling Regional Impact and Philanthropy." The engagement in the room was great—thoughtful questions, rich dialogue, and seeing so many people holding up their phones to take photos of nearly every slide was such an unforgettable moment! 💡 I attended several insightful sessions that sparked new ideas for driving student success. I’m walking away with actionable tools and resources that I can’t wait to bring back to our teams next week. 🤝 Our team had the chance to connect with amazing funding partners on-site, including representatives from Kresge, Stupski, and Trellis Foundation. It’s exciting to see how much national recognition 10,000 Degrees continues to build in this space. Grateful for this milestone, this community, and looking forward to weaving these takeaways into our work! Check out a few photo highlights from the experience below. 📸👇 #NCAN #10000Degrees #FirstTimeSpeaker #CollegeAccess #HigherEd #NonprofitLeadership #StudentSuccess
