The fight for human rights never sleeps.

About us

Amnesty International is a global movement of more than 10 million people who take injustice personally. We are campaigning for a world where human rights are enjoyed by all. We are funded by members and people like you. We are independent of any political ideology, economic interest or religion. No government is beyond scrutiny. No situation is beyond hope. WHAT DOES AMNESTY DO? We investigate and expose the facts, whenever and wherever abuses happen. We lobby governments, and other powerful groups such as companies. Making sure they keep their promises and respect international law. By telling the powerful stories of the people we work with, we mobilize millions of supporters around the world to campaign for change and to stand in defence of activists on the frontline. We support people to claim their rights through education and training.

Updates

  • One year since the ceasefire agreement, more than 1,400 people have been killed by Israeli forces in Gaza, nearly two million still need shelter, not a single hospital is fully functioning, and 1.4 million face crisis-level hunger. Accountability cannot be swept under the rubble. The recovery and future of Gaza cannot be separated from a framework grounded in international law, justice, and the rights of victims. The persistent failure to hold Israel accountable and press Israel to comply with the International Court of Justice’s binding orders continues to fuel the atrocity crimes on a mass scale against Palestinians.

  • 1 October is the International Day of Older Persons, and this year we’re marking more than a celebration. Work has officially begun on a UN convention on older people's rights, bringing us one step closer to protecting our rights as we grow older. At Amnesty, we stand with older people to make sure their voices and experiences are heard and help shape the convention that will protect our rights in older age. Because, as we age, our rights should never be denied. #IDOP2026 #AgeLoud

  • Over the past three years multiple organizations including Amnesty, UN bodies and scholars have highlighted the unprecedented levels of destruction inflicted by Israeli forces in the occupied Gaza Strip.   Now Google has updated the publicly available images for some neighbourhoods to February 2026 and the horrifying extent of this destruction is available for all to see. The chilling satellite imagery shows entire neighbourhoods across the Gaza Strip have been completely wiped out.    According to the UN Satellite Centre (UNOSAT) around 82% of all structures in the Gaza Strip have been damaged and two thirds of these destroyed in an area less than half the size of New York City. At least 1.4 million Palestinians in Gaza have been displaced and grapple with harsh living conditions.   These scenes of destruction are a chilling testament to Israel’s ongoing campaign of systematic wanton destruction in Gaza documented by Amnesty.   The sheer scale of the devastation points to a deliberate pattern by Israeli authorities of razing civilian areas and rendering them uninhabitable as part of their ongoing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. This must end now.   Israel must allow shelter and reconstruction material and equipment into Gaza and ensure people internally displaced can return to their lands, including to areas behind the so-called yellow line.

  • While Israel continues its genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, ethnic cleansing in the West Bank and persists with imposing its unlawful occupation and system of apartheid against Palestinians, PM Benjamin Netanyahu, wanted by the ICC for war crimes and crimes against humanity, is set to address the UN General Assembly in New York instead of standing trial at The Hague.  It is doubly shameful that the US government continues to ignore the arrest warrant against Netanyahu - while denying Palestinian representatives visas to attend the UNGA. Nearly two years since the ICC issued arrest warrants against Netanyahu, impunity continues to reign - and Palestinians are paying the price. Continuing to undermine the ICC sends a cruel message to all victims of international crimes that prospects for justice remain elusive while the USA and other powerful states deliberately erode the universal value of international law.  All states, including the USA, should enforce the Court’s arrest warrants and hand over Netanyahu to the ICC. International law must be upheld and international justice mechanisms supported to end impunity for international crimes and ensure respect for human rights for all.

  • Iranian authorities committed the crimes against humanity of murder, torture, rape, sexual violence, enforced disappearance, imprisonment and persecution to crush the 2022 Woman Life Freedom uprising. These crimes were part of a widespread and systematic attack against protesters demanding human rights and political change. Systemic impunity for these crimes has fueled further atrocities, reaching an unprecedented scale on 8–9 January 2026 when security forces massacred thousands of protesters within 48 hours. We demand international criminal justice. Join us.

  • As the demand for generative AI has snowballed, the scale of the development of these technologies has spun out of control. Complex supply chains are required to power these systems, presenting us with a trail of human rights risks at every step of their production. These design choices must be challenged. They are not inevitable.

  • We are deeply alarmed by the disturbing reports of #HussamAbuSafiya being subjected to continued beatings, deliberate sleep deprivation, and threats against divulging his detention conditions while in Israeli custody. Israeli authorities must immediately and unconditionally release Dr. Abu Safiya and all Palestinians arbitrary detained. Pending Dr. Hussam’s release, the Israeli Prison Service must ensure he is fully protected from abuse, granted urgent adequate and independent medical care and allowed immediate visitation by independent monitors.

  • Behind the music, costumes and sound systems is a history of resistance, resilience and the fight against racism. Notting Hill Carnival is a testament to the power of community, culture and the determination to be seen, heard and celebrated. Born from protest. Carried forward by generations. Turned up loud for the world to hear.
