Despite it being one of the most competitive markets in of my lifetime, Peter Ludwig reminded me that physical AI is not a zero-sum game. He looked out at the 200 founders in the room at Dirty Jobs and said every one of them can and will be wildly successful, because the markets are that big. Almost 10 years in, Applied Intuition, backed by our friends like Bilal Zuberi, Semil Shah, and Mike Maples, Jr, has a front-row seat to where autonomy is headed. A few things Peter shared from the stage: – While applied still gets called a simulation company, Sim is now a small fraction of what they do. They're building the end-to-end autonomy stack that takes dumb vehicles and makes them smart. – The time is now. Reinforcement learning only got fast enough to matter in the last 12 to 18 months. – The amount of real-world data you need to reach production is also shrinking every month. Their TerraZero work learns motion policies from zero human demonstrations. – Models alone are becoming less of a moat. 50 to 100 companies in China can already match the demos. – Most importantly, anyone relying only on licensed data will hit a ceiling. I'm seeing this play out in real time with more and more Physical AI model companies starting to own their own data, deployment and even hardware. Peter also shared the thing no demo hype video will show you: a component that fails every 30 hours, and five people on site who need retraining the day the robot arrives. Watch the episode to hear how Peter and Qasar Younis overcame this. My chat with Peter from Dirty Jobs is out now as Episode 104 of CLIMB. Link in the comments. 👇

How does labeled data become a model back on the road? Shiyan Xu, an engineer on our Data Engine team, breaks down how we take labeled data through curation, scenarios, data loading, training, and evaluation, all the way back to the fleet, across hundreds of petabytes of multimodal data from automotive, trucking, mining, and robotics fleets. Closing that loop comes down to a few key design choices: 👉 Choosing segments to feed the model: Curation runs selection criteria, like nighttime driving with a cut-in under two seconds, against a curation table hundreds of columns wide. Scenarios no metric or label covers can be found by searching clip embeddings with text or an example clip. 👉 Building scenarios for training: Each scenario bundles aligned frames, labels, map, and route into one row. Lance’s blob v2 API makes each scenario’s blob payload easy to work with: written and versioned with the row, read only when needed. Data evolution adds new fields without rewriting existing files. 👉 Turning scenarios into model inputs: Lance’s random access lets training sample rows non-sequentially in small, scattered batches, with each batch fetched as a single take. Checkpointing lets a restarted job pick up where the sampler left off instead of replaying. 👉 Training in two stages: Imitation learning first teaches the model to drive like the fleet’s drivers, then reinforcement learning takes over in closed loop, learning from the consequences of its own actions in simulation. 👉 Closing the loop: A release gate blocks a candidate on a statistically significant regression, a broken hard threshold, or a failing sentinel scenario check. Once the model is deployed, its failures on the road get curated into the next round’s evaluation and hard-case datasets. Want to go deeper? Check out Shiyan’s full breakdown here: https://lnkd.in/gxq4VTMP And if you’re headed to LanceDB's #Reverie2026 on Nov. 5th, he’ll be presenting on the main stage at 11:30 AM PT.

End-to-end driving models usually learn from fleet-scale human driving logs. Those logs are expensive to collect to capture the safety-critical long tail. Wei Zhan and his team have developed TerraTransfer++ to remove human demonstrations from every stage of training. This means: • Drive: a policy learns through PPO self-play in our vectorized simulator, TerraZero. • Plan: its rollouts are distilled into a flow-matching trajectory planner. • See: adapters on a frozen DINOv3 backbone align a camera-only student to the teacher, using only paired (image, scene-state) frames. The result: the best of any published method on NAVSIM and HUGSim, the most widely used E2E driving benchmarks Paper: arxiv.org/abs/2610.30319 Project: https://lnkd.in/diWpiq83
Can we achieve state-of-the-art for mainstream E2E and vectorized driving benchmarks without using any human demonstration data? Terra series at Applied Intuition now tops the NAVSIM, HUGSim, nuPlan val14 and InterPlan benchmarks, powered by self-play RL without imitation, scaling in closed loop with all agents being reactive. 🚘 With TerraZero released a few months ago, we set the SOTA on vectorized benchmarks like nuPlan val14 and InterPlan, powered by our super high-throughput self-play RL framework experiencing 25 centuries of challenging driving scenarios. 📽️ In June this year, TerraTransfer was released as the first of its kind to bring the SOTA vectorized policy from self play (TerraZero) to an E2E policy via image-to-vector encoder alignment, which topped the HUGSim closed-loop score. 🔚 This week, we are thrilled to release TerraTransfer++, a demonstration-free E2E planner setting the SOTA for NAVSIM and HUGSim, by adding planning capability from self-play rollout experience to TerraTransfer. Setting SOTA for public benchmarks is just a beginning, as we have seen the journey from pioneering work like UniAD to successful mass production of E2E ADAS in the industry, but what makes me quite excited is to see the strong signal from a new paradigm with potential to refactorize how the next generation autonomy can be developed, and bring the scalability, safety and performance to the next level. We are the believer of data and scaling, but not just human demonstration data and open-loop scaling like imitation or open-loop RL (AV2.0) - we have the bet on closed-loop scaling with both synthetic and real-world data (AV3.0), and the Terra series is the starting point of the journey towards real product with our bet. Data Engine jumpstarts autonomous capabilities by collecting training data via passive navigation capabilities installed on U.S. Navy ships. The US Navy’s challenge in fielding autonomous and AI-enabled systems is generating high-quality, operationally-representative data to train, test, and validate them. Data Engine is the infrastructure layer that helps collect operational data, curates it, and trains perception models. It then evaluates and deploys those models back to vessels over the air. The result is what one ship learns now reaches the entire fleet – a threat encountered by a single vessel is turned into an improved model and deployed over the air, so every ship can detect it. Future conflicts will be won by nations that can field autonomous capabilities faster and more effectively than their adversaries. That requires infrastructure that can continuously collect data from operational environments, train models on that data, and deploy improved capabilities back to the field continuously. We are building toward a future where each military service operates its own Data Engine, tailored to its domain, and feeding into a common infrastructure. https://lnkd.in/g5F5Cw7F

Put simply: building one great cabin experience is challenging enough. Building a system that can produce fourteen of them and keep every one up to date long after the vehicles ship is another matter entirely. That is the problem we’re solving with the Stellantis team on the STLA SmartCockpit. Cabin Intelligence built into the vehicle’s operating system, not layered on top, so it can coordinate tasks across every app in the vehicle, and the voice agent can draw on what’s on the screen and what other apps are doing to deliver accurate, personalized results. It’s also modular. Letting each brand control its own layouts, feature selection, graphics, and themes on a shared foundation that can be continuously upgraded. For OEMs, that removes the tradeoff between affordability and flexibility. For designers, it means spending their time and energy on the experience itself. https://lnkd.in/geZSyk57

What does it mean to design a car when software shapes the experience? Our Head of Design and Marketing, Karl Heiselman, toured Stellantis’ campus in Auburn Hills with Chief Design Officer, Ralph Gilles. They talked about how Applied Intuition and Stellantis are working together on STLA SmartCockpit, Stellantis’ in-vehicle infotainment platform, powered by Applied Intuition's Cabin Intelligence, and why design is key to delivering a truly remarkable experience for drivers. As Ralph puts it, the job of designers is “to not forget the human involved.” https://lnkd.in/g-kajtsZ

Learning dexterous manipulation skills via RL poses a challenging exploration problem. Our Chief Scientist, Wei Zhan, and his team resolve it with X-Reset: sampling resets from retargeted human hand-object states. One policy. Diverse objects, from small markers to heavy power drills. Zero real world robot data.
Reinforcement Learning (RL) in simulation is a scalable strategy to learn dexterous skills, but naive exploration from scratch often fails to discover manipulation strategies for diverse objects. At Applied Intuition, we propose X-Reset: we resolve the exploration problem by randomly sampling RL resets from human hand-object states. ➡️ Kinematic retargeting from human to robot simply seeds exploration, so the embodiment gap does not get in the way ➡️ Human hands are used for resets rather than reference motions, so it drops into existing generalist RL pipelines ➡️ Massive learning boost across different reward formulations ➡️ Zero real-world robot data in training We see promising results from this straightforward recipe: 🛠️ A single policy manipulating a wide range of objects, from small markers to heavy power drills, to any goal pose 🤖 Zero-shot generalization beyond the training set (DexYCB), and a pre-trained backbone that fine-tunes on novel objects without additional human demonstrations 🔬 Zero-shot sim-to-real transfer with off-the-shelf object pose-tracking models, including recovery behaviors under real-world perturbations We are continuously expanding robotics research at Applied Intuition beyond X-Reset, with the bounds of simulation and synthetic data for dexterous manipulation pushed. Stay tuned and join us! 🌐 Project page: xreset-applied.github.io 📄 Paper: arxiv.org/abs/2609.35715 Nice work from Prithwish Dan Chenyang Ma!
