About us
Central Synagogue is a thriving Reform congregation affiliated with the Union for Reform Judaism. We are one of the oldest Reform congregations in New York City, and one of the largest in North America. Located in Midtown Manhattan, we serve more than 2,000 families in our congregation, as well as the larger community. More than 800 students, from birth to twelfth grade, are enrolled in our Nursery and Religious Schools. Central Synagogue stands at the heart of one of the greatest centers of Jewish life. It has always played a significant role in the national Reform movement and in the creative and complex Jewish community of New York City. Its clergy and members continue a long tradition of leadership at the local, national, and international levels of Jewish and civic organizations.

On Kol Nidre, our President Jon May reminded us that Central's work is possible only because of gifts like yours. Our worship services, music, and classes — all of it depends on the generosity of this community. Please consider a gift to our Yom Kippur Appeal so Central can continue to be the community we all need. Give today: https://lnkd.in/gM53tcGy

We're so grateful to UJA-Federation of New York and so many in our interfaith community for their words of kindness, resilience, and support.
We’re so grateful to clergy members from across New York who have come together in an interfaith show of solidarity with Central Synagogue and the greater Jewish community following last Friday night’s attack. Together, they’ve sent a clear message: hate has no place in any house of worship – and everyone deserves to gather in prayer without fear. As we head into Shabbat, we hold fast to a simple hope: that every New Yorker can gather in worship, and practice their faith, safely and freely. Wishing everyone a Shabbat Shalom, and a weekend filled with peace and blessings.

Central Synagogue reposted this
How many Orthodox institutions are partnering with Reform ones to deepen our Jewish learning? YCT is. Last week, YCT joined Central Synagogue’s "Doing Jewish" Intro-to-Judaism class, where members learned in chavrutah with YCT semikha students. Journalist Abigail Pogrebin and Rabbi Dov Linzer, co-authors of “It Takes Two to Torah,” spoke to these students about Jewish pluralism and their experiences as a Reform lay Jew and an Orthodox rabbi co-creating. In an increasingly divided world, the night was a reminder of the importance of pluralism and of how easy it is for Jews of different backgrounds to connect over a shared love of Torah. #YCTCommunity #CentralSynagogue #JewishLearning #PluralismInPractice #TorahLearning

The son of Mizrahi refugees who immigrated to Israel from Iraq and North Africa, Hen Mazzig is one of the leading online advocates against antisemitism, dispelling myths about Israel and explaining diverse Jewish narratives and current events in an approachable and impactful manner. Join him in conversation with Rabbi Angela Buchdahl in the Main Sanctuary on May 27, where he will discuss how we can all make the world safer for Jews, as well as his progressive perspective on Zionism, how to build coalitions, and how to address antisemitism across the political spectrum. You won't want to miss this rare conversation, which is free and open to all. Register: https://lnkd.in/eQfv_GxT
