Fighting for justice since 1969.
About us
Centro Legal de la Raza is a nonprofit legal aid organization that protects and advances the rights of low-income, immigrant, and communities of color through bilingual legal representation, education, and advocacy. Founded in 1969 and headquartered in Oakland, CA, Centro combines free legal services with know-your-rights education and youth development to ensure access to justice for thousands of individuals each year. Our three legal practice areas include immigrants’ rights, tenants’ rights, and workers’ rights. The Youth Law Academy and the Diversity Legal Pipeline work to inspire the next generation of legal leaders and promote diversity in the law field.

We're proud to support this program with the Northern California Grantmakers and the San Francisco Foundation, where our Executive Director, Monique Berlanga, is one of the panelists. Learn more & register here: https://lnkd.in/gyzBJnJq
San Francisco Foundation's Latine Kitchen Cabinet started as an advisory body to advise its work with the Latine community. The impact of these efforts, combined with shared challenges and aspirations, led to a broader commitment: the Bay Area Latine Regional Leadership Table. It recognizes that no single organization, community, or institution can achieve lasting change alone. ✨ Join us to get an overview of what's been learned, what's next, and why philanthropic investment in this regional approach— not just individual grantees—is necessary to achieve lasting impact. ↪️ Register: https://lnkd.in/gyzBJnJq

This Latinx Heritage Month, SFF is highlighting Sergio Garcia and Amelia Gonzalez’s dedication to racial justice and economic opportunity. Through the Garcia Gonzalez Fund, Sergio, Amelia, and their daughters support Bay Area nonprofits led by communities of color that advance economic inclusion, racial justice, and equity in the arts and culture. As East Bay residents, they are especially committed to community-rooted organizations, including Fruitvale-based Centro Legal de la Raza and The Unity Council. Centro Legal was proud to offer legal consultations to families impacted by the East Oakland fire. Thank you to all our partners for showing up.
When our neighbors needed us, our community showed up. Yesterday, we came together with our partners to support families impacted by the devastating fire in East Oakland. From gift cards, hygiene kits, blankets, clothing, diapers, nutritious snacks and beverages to stuffed animals and so much more, our community joined together to help meet immediate needs. We heard the heartbreak, fear, and uncertainty of families who lost so much. But we also witnessed something powerful: a community coming together to lift one another up. We are grateful to the @cityofoakland and Mayor Barbara Lee for organizing this important response, and to every organization and individual who showed up with generosity, compassion, and care. Our Community Partners: Alameda County Social Services Agency, American Red Cross, Centro Legal de la Raza, Lend A Hand Foundation, The Salvation Army Alameda County Coordination, and many more. Help us help others. To support your neighbors affected by the fires, please donate today: https://lnkd.in/gAzA2Xra #firerelief #neighborshelpingneighbors #solidarity #oaklandstrong #strongertogether

Our Youth Law Academy students spent a day among the redwoods at Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park for our very first Healing Retreat. 🌲 The day included activities, a shared lunch, and quiet time for reflection and gratitude. It also marked the kickoff to the 2026-2027 school year, and we're thrilled to begin. Stay tuned for more from this year's cohort! Thank you to the City of Oakland's Resiliency in Communities After Stress and Trauma (ReCAST) initiative for making this day possible. #YouthLawAcademy #YouthDevelopment #LegalAid #CommunityLawyering

Celebrating Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month by spotlighting one of our own this week! 🌟 Meet Siranny Lopez, a recent graduate of our Diversity Legal Pipeline program and a former Centro Legal volunteer. After completing the program, she landed an internship at the Law Offices of Jomana Abdallah, one of our incredible guest speakers. Now she's gearing up for the LSAT and setting her sights on law school. Stories like Siranny's are exactly why representation in the legal field matters and why programs like ours exist. We're beyond proud of everything she brought to Centro Legal, and we can't wait to see where her legal career takes her! 🎓⚖️ Want to help us create more stories like this one? Your donation helps us keep building pathways for the next generation of Latino legal talent. Give today: https://lnkd.in/giJxqdHZ #HispanicHeritageMonth #LatinaInLaw #DiversityInLaw #CentroLegal

Centro Legal's Tenants' Rights Co-Director, David Hall, spoke with KTVU 2 about the Shriver settlement clinic at the Hayward Hall of Justice. Every Wednesday, we rotate hosting duties with our partners, East Bay Community Law Center and the Eviction Defense Center. So far this year, Centro Legal has helped tenants in more than 200 eviction cases through these clinics — helping our neighbors stay safely and securely housed. Watch the full interview below. 👇 https://lnkd.in/gAnheV5N
