SMART scholar Demetrious Kutzke and his research team have developed HREyes, an autonomous underwater vehicle system that monitors a scuba diver's breathing rate in real time by analyzing exhaled bubbles. Tested in open water off Barbados, HREyes marks the first time computer vision has been used to estimate human respiration rate underwater. Demetrious is a doctoral student at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, sponsored by Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division in Panama City, Florida.
