What if healthcare could move beyond traditional clinical environments to become a vibrant, accessible and sustainable community experience? Our C.I.R.C.U.S (Community Integrated Resource Care Unit Spectacular) concept has been named a finalist in the Vision for Health category of the 2026 Architizer Vision Awards. Reimagining healthcare as a mobile, zero-waste destination, the concept brings preventive care, wellness education and community engagement directly to underserved populations. Through seven interactive wellness rings, biodegradable materials and integrated health-monitoring technology, C.I.R.C.U.S. challenges conventional approaches to care delivery while envisioning a healthier future for people and the planet. Congratulations to our San Francisco-based concept design team for this well-deserved recognition and for the creativity, collaboration and dedication that went into bringing this visionary concept to life. Through a grant from the HDR Foundation, students in the Cal Poly Pomona College of Engineering will be able to apply their knowledge by bringing hands-on STEM experiences directly to K-12 schools and community colleges. Sponsored by Stacy Soewono, highway coordinator, the grant supports the BEYOND the Engineering Classroom initiative with a mobile van equipped with technology such as 3D printers, laser scanners, drones and VR headsets to cultivate an early interest in engineering among underserved K-12 students. Stacy and her colleagues recently met with Cal Poly Pomona faculty and students to learn more about the program and how it will support engineering education and outreach. “I’m excited to see the experiences, connections, and opportunities this van will create for CPP students and the communities they serve,” Stacy said. In the October issue of Architectural Record, Omaha Central Library is profiled as a new civic destination in the heart of an evolving urban landscape. The article highlights how the library transforms a commercial corridor into a place for meaningful community and civic engagement. By condensing storage behind the scenes, the Automated Storage and Retrieval system frees up valuable space for makerspaces, collaborative work areas and expanded public programming. The building’s custom unitized façade responds directly to its context, acting as both shield and invitation. Alternating anodized aluminum fins and glazing create a dynamic expression that reflects the energy of the surrounding streetscape while optimizing daylight, energy performance and occupant comfort. Congrats to our colleagues, design partner Alley Poyner Macchietto Architecture, Omaha Public Library, Heritage Omaha, the Omaha Public Library Foundation and all of our partners on the continued success of this new library. Toronto's Ontario Line required a new transit connection through one of the city's most constrained infrastructure corridors. Working with Metrolinx, the regional transportation agency for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, HDR supported the design of two long-span segmental bridges totaling more than 900 meters across the Don Valley, featuring spans of up to 139 meters to navigate highways, rail lines, utilities and environmentally sensitive areas. The I-579 Urban Open Space Cap project continues to demonstrate the power of infrastructure to reconnect communities. Now featured by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Reconnecting Communities Institute, the project showcases what’s possible when transportation investments strengthen connections and create new opportunities for communities. It was our honor to partner with City of Pittsburgh and Sports & Exhibition Authority of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County to bring this vision to life. It's great to see the I-579 Cap recognized among the Institute’s success stories. Watch the 5-minute video: https://bit.ly/3TYFK6Q
