  • Jenner & Block Partner Lucy Blake was quoted in CityAM on the UK government’s proposal to let the Serious Fraud Office financially reward whistleblowers who report economic crime. Lucy pointed to a key difference between the UK and US: because more UK cases go to contested jury trials, whistleblowers are more likely to face jury cross-examination, which could affect their credibility if their payout depends on a conviction. • On October 13, Judge James E. Hanlon, Jr. (Cook County Cir. Ct.) ruled for Jenner & Block client Chancelor J. Bennett, known as Chance the Rapper, on his breach of fiduciary duty claim against former manager Patrick Corcoran. The Court ordered Corcoran to disgorge undisclosed merchandise kickbacks, forfeit the related management compensation, and transfer the chanceraps.com domain to Chance. The ruling is the second half of the case, following the team’s March jury trial verdict, and was tried to the judge because it called for remedies only a judge can award. The Court’s current ruling is significant for many reasons, including because it is the first decision to confirm that a manager who represents an artist is a fiduciary and owes the artist fiduciary duties. The team was led by Partners Precious S. Jacobs, Wade Thomson, and April A. Otterberg. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gFR3dcxa

  • Jenner & Block is pleased to welcome Helen Gilbert, a trial lawyer and former federal prosecutor, as a partner in our San Francisco office. Helen spent more than 10 years in the US Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California, most recently as Chief of the National Security, Cyber, and Special Prosecutions Section. She supervised the prosecution in United States v. Linwei Ding on AI-related economic espionage and trade secret charges, and served as co-lead trial counsel in the prosecution of David DePape. In a data breach or cyber intrusion, the earliest decisions matter most. Helen helps companies take the right first steps, decide when to bring in law enforcement, and use civil tools to protect their position. She also brings years of trial experience before the Northern District bench, a key venue for technology companies. Her arrival marks a return to Jenner, where she was a summer associate in 2007. • Partner Lucy Blake was quoted in a Forward Law Review article on how pressure on companies over business and human rights is shifting from regulatory fines to litigation and reputational risk. Lucy discussed the growing role of NGO and investor-led claims in the UK, the risks created by disclosure requirements, and why companies should involve lawyers when reviewing sustainability and human rights reporting. • London Office Managing Partner Christine Braamskamp shared her insights with City AM on the UK government's plans to hear fraud and financial cases before a judge alone, without a jury, as part of efforts to reduce the record backlog in the Crown Court. Christine explained that if a white-collar case, including fraud, is heard by a judge alone, any reasoned judgment will be read closely by regulators, investors and potentially overseas law enforcement authorities. • London Office Managing Partner Christine Braamskamp shared her insights with Law360 on the hurdles any criminal investigation would face after an independent Premier League commission found that Manchester City used "sham" agreements to disguise owner funding as sponsorship income. Christine explained that applying criminal law in a sporting context could be difficult, since prosecutors would need a deep understanding of the Premier League across multiple seasons in order to prove the required gain by Manchester City or a loss to other Clubs. She noted that the League has no established route for referring its decision to a prosecutor, and that any prosecution would have to prove the case anew; it cannot rely on the commission's findings. Christine concluded that the most likely consequences for the club are sporting sanctions and civil claims rather than a criminal case. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gcHW98Ek
