#NEWSLETTER In this week’s edition of the Media Education Lab newsletter: Teach About Copyright & Fair Use: The Lab has pulled together free resources for every step, from your first lesson to a school-wide policy, including a new fair use guidance document for student media makers. Plus: a New Yorker short on filmmaker Hugh Clegg’s online quest to find the anonymous TikTok user who turned his stolen video into a viral meme. Also in this issue: 🔹 Reflections on Discourse in the Digital Age: Renee Hobbs on sharing the virtual stage with applied linguists at a recent AAAL webinar, making the case for “messy engagement” over tidy, over-scaffolded classroom projects. 🔹 Practical Strategies for AI Literacy: Lab members Wesley Fryer, Scott Moss, and Catharine Reznicek join Vector Solutions to share practical strategies for building AI literacy on the foundations schools already teach. 🔹 Call for book chapters: Handbook on Truth in a Digital Age (Edward Elgar), edited by Renee Hobbs. Proposals due January 15, 2027. The Handbook shifts the field’s organising question from “How do we stop falsehood?” to “What are the conditions under which truth can be established, certified and reasonably trusted?” 🔹 Oct 26 | Media Literacy Week 2026: NAMLE’s “Walk the Line” session with Catherine Morris on active listening and reflective thinking. 🔹 Nov 4 | Media Literacy in a Time of War: Voices from Palestine: a free six-part webinar series opens with “A Survival Skill,” featuring Renee Hobbs, Bilal Younis, and Yonty Friesem. 🔹 Jobs & opportunities: faculty roles at Rutgers, Texas A&M International, UND and UNH, plus the John S. Knight Journalism Fellowship and MSF Without Borders Media Fellowship. 📌 Read the full edition: https://lnkd.in/dcjnz_Mf #MediaLiteracy #CopyrightAndFairUse #AILiteracy #MediaLiteracyWeek

Wrapping up an enriching online symposium on Media Literacy, hosted by Media Education Lab. Across the six sessions from May to October, I learned so much, and each one has become a strong foundation for my future work on media literacy. The guest speakers were so generous with what they shared, and their work spanned such diverse fields that it broadened how I think about the subject. The Padlet activities were beautifully designed and made every session engaging and interactive. Special thanks to Allie Thrall and Salome Apkhazishvili for the timely and extremely well-managed organisation, which made the whole symposium run smoothly. I am extremely grateful to Yonty Friesem and Renee Hobbs for creating this incredible space for media literacy, and for opening it up to all media literacy enthusiasts so that I could be part of it. I’m also thankful for the people I connected with along the way, and I hope we stay in touch and keep the conversation going. #MediaLiteracy #MediaEdLab #OnlineSymposium #PhDLife #AcademicLife #JournalismResearch

#WEBINAR Gaming and Game-making as Media Literacy Julia Feerrar is hosting another edition of Leading from the Library! Gaming is an increasingly important part of the media landscape, but developing literacy skills through gameplay and game-making can be daunting. In this session, we’ll discuss tangible ‘ways in’ to learning about gaming and game-making as a facet of media literacy. DATE: Wednesday, October 14, 2026 TIME: 12 - 1 PM EST LOCATION: Online. Register - https://lnkd.in/dkwbGkdy 💡 FEATURED PRESENTER: Trevor Finney, the manager of the Virtual Environments and Gaming Studios in the University Libraries at Virginia Tech. ABOUT THE WEBINAR SERIES: The Leading from the Library Series explores the unique role that librarians and library workers can play in leading digital and media literacy programs. What unique ‘flavors’ do libraries bring to digital and media literacy learning? What creative solutions are librarians exploring to engage learners? And (how) is AI shaping the conversation about literacy in libraries? Across the series, we’ll explore a range of opportunities and challenges for librarians who are leading or hoping to lead digital literacy initiatives, including how to get started, partnering with learner-leaders, identifying partners, and more. Please get in touch with us if you would like to share your work in this series. Julia Feerrar, Webinar Series Manager | feerrar@vt.edu #MediaEdLab #Gaming #MediaLiteracy

#MEDIAEDBLOG We Were Late to AI. Quantum Is Our Second Chance. Media literacy educators spent years catching up after ChatGPT arrived, and quantum technology is next in line. What if we got a head start this time? Drawing on the Africa Quantum Consortium's Humanising Quantum roundtable, Aurra explores why quantum technology matters for anyone who teaches about hype, privacy and proof, and how Ubuntu can shape the way we bring it into our classrooms.
