Building a Brighter Future for Millions of New Yorkers
About us
The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation provides grants to improve the health and wellbeing of vulnerable New Yorkers, bolster the health outcomes of diverse communities, eliminate barriers to care, and bridge gaps in health services. It seeks to promote, sponsor, and support activities, programs, and initiatives that enhance access to affordable quality healthcare and healthcare-related services and address the unmet healthcare and healthcare related needs of communities across New York State, including, in each case, the social determinants of health, consistent with the ethical principles, tenets, and teachings of the Roman Catholic Faith. Since its inception, the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation has awarded approximately 2,200 grants, totaling nearly $635 million, to nonprofits, community-based organizations, and healthcare and social services providers across New York State.

Thank you to everyone who joined us this morning for our nonprofit-focused event, 'Preparing for Success in the Next Budget Cycle.' Kasirer LLC was proud to bring together nearly 100 nonprofit leaders alongside Anat Gerstein, Inc. and Nonprofit New York, and send a special thanks to Jay Neveloff, Dan Berman and the entire Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer team for hosting us. My biggest takeaway won’t surprise anyone who works in this space: the challenges facing nonprofits are real, and they’re here now. What I told the room today is what I tell every organization I work with, whether you’re trying to break through the noise or take on the red tape that’s held the sector back for years. Build relationships, and build them for the long haul. I can’t say this enough. Partnership is how lasting progress actually happens. That’s what made this morning so meaningful. We had public sector officials, nonprofit executives, foundation leaders and media in the same room, having an honest conversation about where this sector stands and where it needs to go. Anyone who knows me knows I’m an eternal optimist. I’ve spent my career looking for solutions, and I see meaningful momentum, even in a tough funding environment with problems that have been around far too long. When upfront payments were on the line this year, the sector came together, made the case with data, and the funding came through. Capital reform is next, and we’re not letting up. Thank you to Annie Elisa Minguez Garcia of the Mayor's Office of Nonprofit Services (MONS) for her commitment to the sector, to Jacqueline Ebanks for moderating and co-hosting, and to Anne Williams-Isom for a candid, solutions-focused conversation. And thank you to Chymeka Olfonse of Robin Hood, Channon Lucas of Mother Cabrini Health Foundation, Anat Gerstein and Josh Greenman of Vital City for sharing what they’re seeing on the ground.

Building stronger connections for healthier rural communities across New York State. Last month, the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation sponsored the 2026 New York State Association for Rural Health Annual Symposium in Clayton, NY, bringing together leaders and experts to share ideas, strengthen partnerships, and explore solutions to rural health challenges. Our Community Engagement team member Nicolas Polet joined rural health leaders, including Karen Madden of the NYS Department of Health, and gained valuable insights from keynote speaker Dr. Diane Hall, Director of the CDC Rural Health Office. The symposium reinforced the importance of collaboration in expanding access to care and advancing health equity for rural New Yorkers. #NYSARH #RuralHealth #RuralHealthMatters #CommunityEngagement

Understanding a diagnosis, knowing what questions to ask, and finding the right care are all part of health literacy—having the information needed to make a decision about one’s health. In Westchester County, Cancer Support Team’s Caminos de Esperanza, a free Spanish-language well-being group, helps Hispanic cancer patients and their families and caregivers connect to supportive services. With support from the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation, Cancer Support Team is helping more New Yorkers access the information and community they need. Improving health literacy is essential to breaking down barriers to care and helping every New Yorker make informed decisions about their health. #HealthLiteracy #AccessToCare #HealthEquity #CommunityCare

Supporting someone living with a substance use disorder can be challenging, but families should never have to navigate that journey alone. During Substance Use Prevention Month, we're highlighting how Mother Cabrini Health Foundation's investments in substance use prevention, treatment, recovery, and family support are helping build healthier, more resilient communities across New York, including through the work of CMC:Foundation for Change. With support from the Foundation, CMC Foundation for Change offers free, 15-week support and skills groups for individuals and families seeking tools, guidance, and connection while supporting a loved one affected by substance use disorder. By expanding access to prevention services and strengthening family and community support systems, this work helps foster healing, hope, and long-term well-being. At Mother Cabrini Health Foundation, we believe every New Yorker deserves the opportunity to live with dignity, access the care they need, and be supported on their path to health and recovery. #SubstanceUsePreventionMonth #BehavioralHealth #CommunityCare #RecoverySupport #HealthierCommunities

It was such an honor to be on this panel alongside these funders.
During UNGA Week, our Executive Director Jennifer Hoos Rothberg joined funders and partners on panels hosted by the Workday Foundation, World Health Organization, and Mindful Philanthropy to highlight social connection as foundational to human flourishing and the health of our society. It was an honor to share what we are learning with leaders across philanthropy, business, and global health, and to hear how others are fostering social connection in their own communities. We're grateful to the Workday Foundation, the WHO Commission on Social Connection, and Mindful Philanthropy for creating space for these conversations. Thank you also to Carrie Varoquiers and Itai Dinour for guiding them, and to Maria Scigliano, Fiona Yung, Alden Lai, and Rebecca Benghiat, JD, for the care and commitment they bring to this work. As more people of all ages feel the effects of isolation and loneliness, the choices funders make now will shape the social connection field for years to come. That work is stronger when we do it together, and we hope many more partners will join us.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re celebrating the strength and resilience of Hispanic communities across New York State. Today, more than 4 million Hispanic New Yorkers call New York home. And there’s progress to celebrate: more than 90% have health insurance, while the share of Hispanic New Yorkers who reported not having enough food to eat declined from 18% in 2020 to 15% in 2024. At the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation, we’re proud to support organizations building on this progress and helping Hispanic communities access the care and resources they need to thrive. #HispanicHeritageMonth #CommunityImpact #CommunityHealth

When community members become Community Health Workers, they bring trusted relationships, cultural knowledge, and lived experience to the health care system. PRO-SALUD, launched by our grantee partner, Trustees of Columbia University, prepares local residents for these essential roles through Spanish-language training and hands-on field experience. In its first year, the program trained 19 participants who reached more than 700 community members through health education, blood pressure screenings, and referrals to social services. With Mother Cabrini Health Foundation support, PRO-SALUD is expanding its training and helping more participants prepare for work in clinical settings. Swipe to see how community-based training is opening career pathways and strengthening care for Latino immigrant communities. ➡️ #HispanicHeritageMonth #CommunityImpact #CommunityHealth
