The leading self-regulatory association dedicated to responsible data practices in digital advertising | www.thenai.org

About us

Founded in 2000, the Network Advertising Initiative (NAI) is the leading non-profit, self-regulatory association for advertising technology companies. For over 20 years, the NAI has promoted strong consumer privacy protections, a free and open internet, and enabled small businesses to thrive by maintaining and enforcing the highest voluntary industry standards for the responsible collection and use of consumer data. Our member companies range from small startups to the largest companies in the industry, and they collectively represent a substantial portion of the digital advertising ecosystem by providing the technology that facilitates the selection, delivery, and measurement of advertisements between publishers (the websites and apps that display advertisements) and consumer-facing brands (the companies that pay for advertisements).

  • Digital health advertising is helping people get screened, vaccinated, and treated sooner. Now there’s a place to see the evidence. Today the NAI is launching whydigitaladvertising.org, a new website on how responsible digital health advertising supports public health and improves health equity. The research behind it includes 60+ measured findings from 15+ campaigns run by non-profits and federal agencies. They point to benefits such as earlier screenings, higher vaccination rates, and fewer preventable deaths. What you’ll find: 🔹 How it works: what digital health advertising is, the two settings where Americans meet it, and the research base underneath 🔹 What the Data shows: the measured results from those campaigns 🔹 Protecting Privacy: recommendations for policymakers and NAI’s self-regulatory approach The benefits and the privacy protections should go together. That’s the work we do at the NAI. 🔗 Explore the site and download the white paper: whydigitaladvertising.org #DigitalHealth #HealthAdvertising #Privacy #PublicHealth #SelfRegulation

  • Last week, the NAI's Jason Snyder attended IAPP PSR and he came back with five takeaways for ad tech and privacy teams: 1️⃣ Enforcers are hiring technologists and testing practices: Enforcement agencies are becoming more capable of checking that companies are doing what they say, in addition to saying what they do. 2️⃣ If you can link devices for ads, you must link them for opt-outs. The CA AG's February settlement with Disney says a business that can associate a consumer's devices for advertising "can and must" do the same to honor opt-outs. Regulators appear to have much less patience for technical limits and internal silos. 3️⃣ States are coordinating: Pay attention to the California, Colorado and Connecticut joint investigative GPC sweep and the growing Consortium of Privacy Regulators. Expect coordination to widen to broader privacy and data security investigations. 4️⃣ App-store age signals can create "actual knowledge”: New state laws require app stores to send developers each user’s age range. Regulators will likely want companies to apply the lowest age when signals conflict. 5️⃣ Delaware’s HB 380 reaches vendors: The amendments take effect Jan. 1, 2027. Unlike most state laws, they place obligations on vendors, not just controllers, and bar processing without a compliant contract, including for targeted advertising. 🧵 A common thread: assume someone who can look behind your opt-out flows, signal handling and vendor data flows will test them. Test them yourself first, and often. ⬇️ What are your takeaways from the event? #Privacy #AdTech #DigitalAdvertising #PrivacyCompliance #IAPP

  • California’s DROP is nearly 12 weeks in. If your campaigns run on healthcare professional data, it may already be reaching your files. Since August 1, registered data brokers have been processing deletion requests Californians submit through DROP, the state’s Delete Request and Opt-out Platform, and more than half a million residents have signed up. For anyone who buys, licenses, or activates HCP data, the questions are piling up: Does this apply to us? How will a deletion notice reach us? What do we do with it? On Thursday, October 22 at 2:00 p.m. ET, the NAI and HealthLink Dimensions are hosting a free, 30-minute webinar to answer them. The NAI’s Tony Ficarrotta and HealthLink Dimensions’ Nathan Lenyszyn will cover: 🔹 What DROP requires of data brokers, and what the first 12 weeks have shown 🔹 What an HCP data provider sees when it checks California’s deletion lists against its records 🔹 How deletion notices should reach you and what to do with them 🔹 Four actions to take back to your organization, including questions for your data partners Registrants get a one-page guide to the four actions plus the recording. NAI membership isn’t required. ⬇️ Register now [link in comments] ⬇️ #DROP #DeleteAct #HealthcareMarketing #PrivacyCompliance #AdTech

  • How do you deliver more personalized healthcare communications without creating privacy risks along the way? For measurement, de-identification is an important part of the answer. The NAI's Tony Ficarrotta, Vice President and General Counsel, breaks down why separating data from the identifiable individual behind it can help brands measure impact while prioritizing privacy. 🎬 See what that looks like in practice by watching Phreesia Network Solutions's Future of measurement webinar replay: https://lnkd.in/gJ7_EatA

  • 🎙️ Our General Counsel Tony Ficarrotta joined Pedro Pavón 🌸 and Andy Dale on The Data Protection Breakfast Club for a new episode, "Watch Out For Falling Trees." 🌳 Tony has spent years working where privacy law meets the realities of how data actually moves through the ad-tech ecosystem. In this conversation, he digs into why this is such a pivotal moment for the industry, as self-regulation and a fast-growing patchwork of state laws (with federal action still uncertain) increasingly shape what responsible data practices look like. It's a candid, practical discussion for anyone trying to keep pace with privacy compliance in digital advertising, and a great look at the role industry self-regulation can play in setting clear, workable standards. Thank you to Pedro and Andy for having Tony on, and for the thoughtful conversation. 🌳🎧 Consider this your official permission to say 'Watch out for falling trees' in your next privacy meeting. • 🧑⚕️🩺 How are healthcare marketers revolutionizing the way we understand and reach patient and provider populations? In the second episode of our web series, PurpleLab's Theodore Sweetser explores how advanced technologies and deidentified health data are driving unprecedented innovation in healthcare marketing. Here are the key takeaways: 👥 Advanced Audience Segmentation: By leveraging LLMs with RAG-based architectures to reference rich data sources, marketers can perform highly sophisticated analyses of the healthcare space. 🛡️ Safe and Responsible Integration: Combining deidentified health data with consumer pattern insights in a secure, responsible way allows for a level of media relevance and audience segmentation that was previously impossible. 🚀 Faster Measurement & Optimization: Historically slow to adapt, the healthcare advertising ecosystem is experiencing a major shift. Marketers can now analyze correlations between campaigns (TV, mobile, social media) and patient action—such as engaging doctors for earlier disease testing—on a much faster basis. By bringing data together in a secure environment, healthcare marketing is becoming faster, safer, and significantly more impactful. 🎬 Watch Episode two now! #HealthcareMarketing #DataPrivacy #HealthTech #MarketingInnovation
