Saturday is World Cities Day. Cities drive innovation, economic growth and culture — but they also face big challenges, such as poverty, inequality, pollution and climate change. With more than half the world’s population living in cities, urban areas must become more sustainable, inclusive, safe and resilient. Sustainable cities need affordable housing, reliable transport, green spaces and climate-resilient infrastructure. Without these elements, rapid growth can lead to an increase in slums, traffic, pollution and disaster risks. You can also help: advocate for safe streets, clean air and accessible public spaces in your community. 📸: The New York City skyline, featuring UN Headquarters in the distance.

“Our failure to support women is not only unjust; it is self-defeating, short-sighted, and costly.” UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous briefed the United Nations Security Council this week during its annual discussion on Women, Peace and Security. “Women’s leadership for peace is being constrained at the very moment it is needed most,” she said, stressing that, nevertheless, women continue building the foundations for lasting peace every day. “We need more women at the table and more investment in frontline women's organizations, because peace is incomplete without women and girls.”

“Equality is not a dream. It’s a decision. At the UN, it’s a decision we made — and we are a stronger Organization for it.” At the UN Security Council on Tuesday, Secretary-General António Guterres called on leaders to turn equality into action — by ensuring women and girls’ full, equal and meaningful participation in peace processes, investing in women-led organizations and upholding women’s rights. He also urged zero tolerance for gender-based violence, including conflict-related sexual violence, and effective protection for women peacebuilders, human rights defenders and humanitarian workers. “Durable peace must reflect the leadership, aspirations and contributions of all people — including of women and girls.” https://lnkd.in/ekp6aNYd
