Today marks an exciting global milestone for Waymo: we are officially laying the groundwork to bring our autonomous, all-electric, ride-hailing service to Spain, beginning with the Region of Madrid. In the coming weeks, you’ll start seeing our I-PACE vehicles on the road as we kick off manual driving and technical validation with local safety specialists behind the wheel. As we lay the groundwork, our priority is simple: safety, sustainability, and collaboration. It’s the first step in our phased journey to launch fully autonomous ride-hailing in 2027. By starting in the Region of Madrid, we aim to bridge proven safety technology to support zero-emission targets and complement the region’s incredible public transit network. We are committed to being a long-term, collaborative partner in Madrid’s mobility ecosystem, investing in local operations. Drunk driving accounts for about one-third of U.S. traffic fatalities. Our new research establishes a sober driver baseline across the 50 most populous U.S. urban areas and shows that sober drivers have a fatal crash involvement rate 23.3% lower than the overall urban average. However, even entirely sober drivers still navigate a complex system—including sharing the road with impaired motorists and facing compounding hazards like low visibility and high speeds. That is because safety is a systemic issue, not just a behavioral one. A safe roadway for everyone needs overlapping layers of protection: Safer People, Safer Vehicles, Safer Speeds, and Safer Roads. The Waymo Driver is engineered for this—with constant 360 vigilance, following posted speed limits, defensive driving, and zero impairment or distraction. That is why we estimate that autonomous systems could address up to 83% of the system failures contributing to fatal crashes involving passenger vehicles in the U.S. We are proud to partner with MADD to fight drunk driving. As Waymo works to make roads safer for everyone, we must also design for the systemic risks that sober human drivers still face. Read more about our research here: https://lnkd.in/eyEihb4Y

Preparing for the unexpected is an essential part of safety. New research from Waymo introduces a first-of-its-kind framework for autonomous vehicle incident-management exercises, translating established emergency-management practices into guidance tailored specifically to AV operations. The framework covers the stages of exercise preparation, execution, and evaluation, and the range of exercise types, from workshops and tabletop scenarios to drills and full-scale exercises, emphasizing continuous learning, collaboration and an all-hazards approach to preparedness. As autonomous technology scales, preparedness practices should mature alongside it. Read the research: https://lnkd.in/dsUCx-j9

Why does the Waymo Driver rely on cameras, radar, and lidar? The answer comes down to sensor fusion. While it is easy to assume multiple sensor modalities are just layers of backup, each one plays an indispensable role in how the vehicle perceives its surroundings. At a recent Y Combinator Startup School session, our co-CEO Dmitri Dolgov walked through the engineering philosophy behind the Waymo Driver.

270 million fully autonomous miles. 841 fewer injury-causing crashes. Waymo has driven the equivalent of over 300 human lifetimes behind the wheel across Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco through June 2026. Compared to human driving benchmarks over that same distance in those cities, the Waymo Driver had: 📉 82% fewer injury-causing crashes 📉 95% fewer serious injury or worse crashes As our service scales, road safety scales with it.
