The American Council of the Blind is a founding member of the Waymo Accessibility Network and a vital partner in our work to make our app and rider experience accessible to people who are blind and low-vision. Building on this longtime partnership, we were proud to present the 2026 American Council of the Blind of New York (ACBNY) State Convention in Yonkers! Throughout the convention, we had the opportunity to connect directly with members of New York’s blind and low-vision community and welcome attendees to see a Waymo vehicle firsthand. As Waymo looks to a future where we can serve New Yorkers, engaging directly with communities across the state helps us better understand how autonomous driving technology can expand mobility options and support greater independence for the people who may one day ride with Waymo. Thank you to ACBNY for bringing together community members and technology leaders for an important weekend of learning and connection. We’re grateful to everyone who spent time with the Waymo team! As Waymo continues to engage communities across Philly, we’re working with community organizations to better understand how we can meet the needs of residents, including people who are blind or have low vision. Waymo was proud to support the Foundation Fighting Blindness’ Philadelphia VisionWalk! We loved joining members of the Philadelphia-area community for this 5K walk and run to support the Foundation while inviting attendees to meet our team and see a Waymo vehicle up close. Connecting directly with the blind and low-vision community is an important part of our work. Events like VisionWalk give us an opportunity to better understand how accessible transportation can support greater mobility independence. Waymo has worked closely with the disability community through our Accessibility Network to integrate accessible features into our app and rider experience, from screen-reader support and in-car audio journey narration to audio cues and vehicle sounds that can help riders locate their Waymo. Thank you to the Foundation Fighting Blindness and everyone who stopped by to connect with our team! October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month! Waymo was honored to recently attend the Workforce Innovation and AI-Driven Technology conference, hosted by MassAbility in Waltham, MA, to explore how AI and innovation can expand workforce participation, including for people with disabilities. It is our hope that Waymo's autonomous driving technology can add a safe, mobility option for people with disabilities, expanding a sense of freedom to go from A to B on their own terms, whenever they choose. Waymo has designed its app and in-car features with people with disabilities in mind including screen-reader support, turn-by-turn walking directions, options to minimize walking time, and audio cues and vehicle sounds that can help riders locate their Waymo. Thank you to MassAbility for advancing these conversations. The event was especially meaningful to us as we continue to lay the groundwork to serve passengers in Boston, Massachusetts. This Blindness Awareness Month, we’re proud to support our partners at Foundation Fighting Blindness and their #ShareYourVision campaign. Through #ShareYourVision, Foundation Fighting Blindness is highlighting the diverse experiences of people who are blind or have low vision and helping more people understand the many ways vision loss can impact everyday life. Working with and learning directly from the blind and low-vision community is an important part of our approach to making the Waymo app and rider experience accessible, including for riders who are blind and low-vision. We’re grateful to partners like Foundation Fighting Blindness for helping elevate these perspectives and create greater awareness and understanding. New safety data shows the Waymo Driver’s real-world impact: across 270 million autonomous miles, more than 300 human lifetimes of driving, Waymo estimates that at least 841 people avoided injuries they otherwise would have sustained in traffic crashes. Across those miles, Waymo achieved an 82% reduction in injury-causing crashes compared with human drivers and was involved in 95% fewer crashes causing serious injury or worse. Even more encouraging: as miles are added, these findings continue to replicate across cities where Waymo operates. The impact is especially meaningful for people who are most vulnerable on our roads: · 93% fewer injury-causing pedestrian crashes · 86% fewer injury-causing cyclist crashes · 82% fewer injury-causing motorcycle crashes Behind every crash that doesn’t happen is a person who gets home safely. That’s what progress looks like: technology delivering measurable safety benefits and helping make streets safer for everyone. Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) encourages all AV companies to be transparent about their safety performance. Data such as what Waymo shared today is critical as AVs become a larger part of our transportation network.

A new way to move around Las Vegas has arrived! 🚙 Last month, Blind Center of Nevada member Havander and member of our staff had the opportunity to experience a Waymo demo ride. Now, Waymo is officially welcoming its first public riders in Las Vegas with fully autonomous trips. For people who are blind or visually impaired, accessible transportation options can create greater independence, choice and connection. We’re excited about the potential for autonomous ride-hailing to expand mobility options throughout our community. We’re also grateful for Waymo’s continued support of the Blind Center of Nevada. Congratulations, Waymo! We’re excited to officially welcome you to Las Vegas. 💙

Reliable transportation is essential to helping older adults remain connected, independent and engaged in their communities. The AARP Tampa Bay team recently tested a Waymo self-driving vehicle to learn more about an emerging transportation option in the area. As technology continues to reshape mobility options, it is just as important to consider how a range of transportation choices can help people of all ages navigate and engage with their communities.

Waymo is coming to Denver. And whether you’ve ridden in one yet or not, there’s something about this technology worth paying attention to. It can see people walking. People biking. Other cars. It can recognize what’s happening around it and react. It doesn’t get distracted looking at its phone. It doesn’t get drunk or high, then drive. It doesn’t speed because it’s running late. It doesn’t have road rage. But here’s the thing: a car doesn’t have to drive itself to keep you safer. Cars can already detect a person in their path and brake before hitting them. That technology exists today. Technology that could protect you. Your kid crossing the street. Your partner on a bike ride. The person pushing a stroller across a parking lot. So why isn’t that level of protection standard in every new car? Because it is in other countries. Cars with technology (like automatic emergency braking) that can help prevent us from killing each other shouldn’t be optional. And that’s why we have a federal bill in Congress right now to make this kind of technology standard in new cars sold in the U.S. #TheWhiteLine #RoadSafety #SafetyTech #Waymo

About 255,000 to 390,000 people currently live with a spinal cord injury (SCI) in the United States, with the majority of SCIs occurring in young to middle-aged adults, according to the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center. Many of those with an SCI lose their ability to drive, but they shouldn’t lose their autonomy and freedom of mobility in life. This is a belief we share with our new community partner: Empower Spinal Cord Injury, Inc! EmpowerSCI is dedicated to helping those with spinal cord injuries lead more independent, happier, and meaningful lives. We were proud to recently support EmpowerSCI’s Empower on the Water event at The Tall Ship on Boston Harbor. Thanks to everyone who came out to this fun occasion to support EmpowerSCI’s amazing work in the Boston community and beyond.
