Today, the Board of the AI Office of Ireland met for its inaugural meeting. The Office has an important role to play as the central coordination authority for the implementation of the EU AI Act in Ireland; promoting responsible AI innovation, and providing a focal point for engagement with industry, the public, academia and wider society. As AI technologies continue to evolve, effective governance and stakeholder engagement will be critical to ensuring that Ireland can realise the opportunities AI presents while maintaining trust. We would like to thank our Board members for their engagement as we work to support a responsible and innovative AI ecosystem in Ireland. #AI #AIGovernance #ArtificialIntelligence #AIOfficeofIreland #AItechnologies *AI Modified*
Welcome to the Board. One reality that rarely gets said out loud: regulated sectors will manage this. MedTech, pharma and financial services already have the reflexes, the documentation habits and the inspection culture. The AI Act lands on top of something that exists. Everywhere else, ai governance is optional in practice. No inspector, no precedent, and every commercial signal pointing towards ai investment rather than ai control. Those firms are not resisting governance. They simply have no reason to build it yet, and no template to follow. That is the gap I would want a central coordination authority looking at hardest.
One of the key tasks facing the board will be navigating public mistrust of AI companies and the wider anti-tech backlash that is gathering at pace.
I wonder why we don't have an Accessibility Office of Ireland to serve as the central coordinating authority for implementing the EU Accessibility Act in Ireland, to promote responsible Accessibility innovation, and to provide a focal point for engagement with industry, the public, academia and wider society.
This may be one of the most consequential boards Ireland appoints in a generation. There is serious expertise here across regulation, law, academia, governance and AI. But one question genuinely worries me: where are the people building at the frontier? Where is the AI-native founder shipping every week? The engineer working with these models every night? The younger generation already experiencing AI through school, Snapchat, synthetic media and work? The AI Office’s mandate includes not only implementing the EU AI Act, but driving AI innovation and adoption. That distinction matters. Ireland sits at a unique intersection between Europe and the US technology ecosystem. Regulate too aggressively and innovation moves elsewhere. Move too slowly and genuine harms scale before institutions can react. I hope this Board brings founders, engineers, students and people actually deploying AI into the room continuously, not simply through occasional consultation. The people governing this transition need constant contact with the people living it. Many of us would gladly contribute.
I hope that one of the Board's main pillars will include environmental impact of AI usage. Significant consideration should be given to the impact of organisational AI usage on the environment, especially with recent news on international climate change acceleration past the 1.5 degree mark.
Wonderful achievement but necessary to mirror the comments. If this work is to build public trust, the people shaping ai governance should reflect the people who will live and work within these systems. A board with deep experience is valuable but meaningful representation across gender, ethnicity, disability, age, discipline, and lived experience will make its decisions more legitimate, more robust, and better able to identify harms before they reach the public.
I'm open to being corrected however, my assumption, based on empirical evidence is that not one of those people will be raising the essential step of discovering all sensitive data before it goes into AI as part of AI governance. Without that, governance is not governance.
Absolutely no disrespect to the people on the board and I wholeheartedly welcome it, however the lack of youthful representation means a 360 degree view is completely missing and a major section of our future society will go unrepresented
