The policies exist. The enforcement doesn’t. A new report from Fundación Maldita.es and Science Feedback tested how YouTube & TikTok handle climate disinformation. The findings are stark: YouTube appeared to demonetise just 5% of reported videos, while TikTok restricted only a fraction of the content flagged. Platform commitments mean little without consistent enforcement, transparency and accountability. Read the report: https://lnkd.in/eRQYwhEs

Where do you get your information about climate change? For many of us, the answer is social media. But what happens when algorithms prioritise engagement over accuracy? In his latest WhyNot article, Declan explores the growing role social media plays in shaping public understanding of climate change, from misinformation and echo chambers through to corporate greenwashing and the challenges of navigating information online. The article asks important questions: • How do social media algorithms influence what we see and believe? • Why is climate misinformation so effective online? • What does greenwashing look like in practice? • How can young people become more informed and critical consumers of information? As climate conversations continue to shape policy, public debate and future action, media literacy has never been more important. This article is a timely reminder that being informed is not just about consuming information. It's about understanding where that information comes from, who benefits from it, and whether it stands up to scrutiny. Great to see this climate disinformation primer out from NewClimate Institute for EU policymakers, and to see frameworks from the Weathering Extremes toolkit with Jennie K. incorporated on extreme weather disinfo specifically. Though aimed at different audiences, there's a lot of commonality across the US, European, and other settings, including the need for risk prioritization frameworks, local capacity building, pre-disaster preparation, offline "trust architecture," and upstream interventions. One key difference is that in Europe there are more tools and political appetite for some of the tech/media regulations that could more systematically disincentivize climate-related disinformation, propaganda, and hate speech before it becomes a problem in Asheville, Valencia, or anywhere else. Lots more to do to share lessons across the Atlantic and put some living technical support behind these best practices. https://lnkd.in/eyUTjwJi Climate Action Against Disinformation Sarah Jackson C40 Cities Jennie K. More Carbon Illiteracy making a news story incomplete, less appealing and less impactful. (I say this as a former BBC network radio journo) The BBC News reporter refers to opposition from residents and campaigners - completely missing the hundreds of scientists, the report from Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research and the government’s own independent experts Climate Change Committee saying that the new runway will bulldoze the legal commitments binding the government without substantial work to mitigate that. Ok the latter were referred to but in the context of pushing up fares. How you can report on this without this context is simply incompetent IMHO. Regardless of your position on climate change it’s just not the whole story - not marginal to the issue but central to it. Perhaps a lack of critical thinking after lobbying? After all, lobbyists and press releases are not there to talk the whole story… Reporters trained on a course certified by The Carbon Literacy Project would not do this (link to story below)

A new report from the Forum on Information and Democracy finds that most governments lack dedicated strategies for climate information integrity. Responsibility remains spread across institutions, while civil society, journalists and researchers continue to fill gaps in government action. Governments need to move beyond recognising the problem and take action, backing independent journalism, supporting climate information integrity research and working together to tackle climate disinformation. https://lnkd.in/eBiUuAi3

If you're a journalist interested in exploring climate solutions, this webinar is for you! Join us next Tuesday, October 6, 12 PM EST! We're partnering with Solutions Journalism Network to offer a free training, Simulating Climate Solutions with En-ROADS, led by Katherine Markova. En-ROADS is a climate simulator co-developed by Climate Interactive and MIT Sloan School of Management. Journalist participants will get to dive into solutions, from renewable energy and transport electrification to nature-based solutions and innovations like technological carbon removal, and learn how they can reduce health, nature, and financial impacts of climate change. The training will also cover how En-ROADS is used by advocates and journalists to conduct research, fact-check legislative proposals, and communicate complex concepts in an accessible manner. All levels of experience are welcome! Sign up here: https://ow.ly/5pRB50ZLxg2

You can’t simply tell people they need to save the climate. Climate action works best when it offers clear economic benefits, lower energy bills, rather than relying on environmental arguments alone. https://lnkd.in/eCa_2G9p
