Rivian and Redwood Materials have expanded their partnership to implement a comprehensive battery lifecycle strategy incorporating recycling, second-life stationary energy storage, and manufacturing scrap recovery. By collecting retired vehicle battery packs via Rivian's service network, the program prioritizes second-life stationary storage applications—including a 10 MWh system deployed at Rivian's assembly plant in Normal, Illinois—to support grid stability and reduce facility energy costs. At the end of life, Redwood's recycling processes recover over 95% of key critical minerals, reinforcing domestic battery supply chains. 🔋 #EV #BatteryRecycling #SupplyChain #EnergyStorage [1]

Rivian and Redwood Materials announced today that Redwood will now recycle Rivian's manufacturing scrap and end-of-life battery packs, expanding the partnership the two companies started in April with a 10 MWh energy storage system at Rivian's plant in Normal, Illinois. Retired packs are collected through Rivian's nationwide service center network, and Redwood evaluates each one to decide whether it goes into stationary storage at Rivian facilities or elsewhere, or straight to recycling. Once packs reach the end of their storage life, Redwood recycles them too, recovering lithium, nickel, cobalt, and copper at rates above 95%. As an R1S and R2 owner, I like seeing a defined path for these batteries after they leave the vehicle, and I'd expect the Normal storage system to grow past its first 10 MWh as more early R1 packs come back through service. I really don’t think that many folks outside of a very niche industry, appreciate the enormity of what this really means. Traditionally, non-EV vehicles would have components recycled in a certain way (if at all), but the hydrocarbons were the issue. The storage mechanism in electric vehicles is a little different and there are responsibilities required to deal with the full life cycle. We have options that include offshoreing our waste, or we can deal with it responsibly and intelligently in the United States, and I firmly believe Redwood Materials with Rivian has the appetite to invent new verticals, but also understands the need for the recycling business. For instance, what happens to recall battery packs from OEMs? Yet better still, what happens to battery packs after vehicle collision or a repair job from an automotive job shop, or an end of life battery that now cannot produce more than 70% of its capacity after eight years? You don’t simply discard this in a landfill.
A massive energy unlock. We’re expanding our partnership with Redwood Materials to collaborate across the full lifecycle of Rivian battery packs. A battery pack that’s no longer right for a high-performance EV doesn’t have to be done. It can be repurposed into stationary energy storage to support grid reliability and store clean energy. And when it truly reaches the end of the road, it can be recycled. Battery scrap and end-of-life packs go back through the process, recovering over 95% of critical minerals—including lithium, nickel, cobalt, and copper—for a domestic supply chain. Building on our initial energy storage deployment at our manufacturing plant in Normal, Illinois, we’re proving how a fully circular battery ecosystem can power a cleaner, more resilient future. Exciting development from ZETA Members⚡️ Rivian and Redwood Materials. EV batteries have a much longer lifecycle than many realize! When no longer appropriate for transportation, they can be repurposed for energy storage and later recycled to build future batteries!

A massive energy unlock, indeed. That's the idea behind our work with Rivian and the way we're approaching today's increasing energy demand more broadly. Recovering and repurposing battery material efficiently is one of the ways we're able to deploy energy faster, more flexibly, and at lower cost than waiting on the grid alone.
