Anduril’s cruise missile family has achieved a landmark milestone by becoming the first large-scale production munition certified as compliant with the U.S. Air Force’s Weapon Open Systems Architecture (WOSA). This certification validates the Barracuda’s modular design, enabling rapid hardware and software swaps to counter evolving threats. The certification of Barracuda-M is a definitive shift away from "black box" proprietary munitions. By standardizing 14 domains, from the autopilot to the seekers, the USAF is mandating a plug-and-play ecosystem for kinetic effects. This technical initiative allows for the rapid integration of third-party seekers or AI-driven autonomy software without a total system redesign. For decades, the munition market was dominated by primes with closed architectures. Anduril’s success with a WOSA-compliant, mass-producible missile is a direct challenge to this model. It enables the DoD to compete individual sub-systems throughout the weapon's lifecycle, significantly reducing long-term sustainment costs and modernization speed, in a time where missions and technical specifications can change in a matter of weeks. In future contested environments, the ability to upload a new electronic warfare (EW) algorithm or swap a payload in the field rather than waiting for a multi-year Block upgrade will be the difference between mission success and failure. https://lnkd.in/ejNCAvky

I’ll be at DEFSEC Atlantic 2026 in Halifax this week, representing Volantek and continuing the customer-discovery work we have been doing across defence and aerospace. Volantek is working on frontier technologies for high-speed and hypersonic systems, including multi-fidelity modelling and simulation, with particular interest in the operational problem of detecting, tracking and characterizing fast-moving objects for ISR and early warning. The same questions extend to re-entering space debris, where uncertainty in trajectory and state can directly affect decisions. Recent conversations have reinforced that interests in the implications of hypersonic threats, and the need for faster and more reliable warning, are emerging rapidly. DEFSEC is an opportunity for us to learn directly from operators, industry and defence organizations working on these problems. Key Development 1 of the week = Anduril’s Barracuda: America needs missiles that can be produced in quantity and upgraded without restarting the engineering program. Anduril’s Barracuda just cleared a meaningful milestone toward that goal. On September 23, @Anduril Industries announced that its Barracuda-M cruise missile family completed independent verification against the Air Force’s Weapon Open Systems Architecture, or WOSA, standard. The assessment was conducted by @Air Force Research Laboratory through its Munition Open Architecture Test and Evaluation Laboratory. Air & Space Forces Magazine reported that engineers evaluated 14 architecture domains, including navigation, guidance, propulsion and mission autonomy. The next milestone is customer acceptance of those first deliveries, followed by evidence that upgrades can enter production without disrupting cost, quality or schedule. This is a practical American advantage worth building: government laboratories laying groundwork, private industry engineering on top of it, and manufacturers delivering systems that can keep improving after the first production lot.
