Had a lot of fun discussing #SMR and #advanced #nuclear with Gerard Reid and Laurent Segalen. The more I look at this space, the more fascinating I find it. There are some brilliant technologies and engineering ideas being developed. But ultimately, the best #reactor will not necessarily be the most advanced one. It will be the one that can actually be built repeatedly, on time and at a cost customers are willing to pay. We are only beginning to find out whether that can happen. If you’re working in this space or simply curious about it, reach out. I’d be very happy to have a chat. S&P Global
🎙️251. Fission Impossible: the SMR Gamble #spotify https://lnkd.in/ditGthT #applepodcast https://lnkd.in/dhTv48S Last year, the nuclear industry experienced something close to a gold rush. SMRs — Small Modular Reactors — became the hottest story in energy. Private capital poured in, valuations exploded, and the industry produced a collection of truly bombastic promises. The backdrop is undeniably powerful: electrification is accelerating, geopolitics are reshaping energy markets, and the world needs reliable, 24/7 clean power. Nuclear has rarely enjoyed such formidable tailwinds. So, what could possibly go wrong? Gerard Reid and Laurent Segalen bring in Andrei Utkin, Associate Director at S&P Global Energy, to separate the nuclear opportunity from the hype. The problem? The Western nuclear supply chain has struggled to deliver large reactors on time and on budget this century. Governments are nevertheless pushing ahead — rightly so. We are particularly interested to see how GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy’s reactor in Ontario and Rolls-Royce SMR in the UK perform. These projects have government backing, established supply chains, and decades of nuclear experience. Whatever the final cost — which, for reasons that remain remarkably consistent, always seems to rise — these SMRs are likely to happen. But the fascinating story is the private SMR market. It counts roughly 50 developers, 130 designs, 20 publicly listed companies, and over $10 billion in private and corporate capital. Yet only a handful of technologies are approaching commercial deployment. Some have reached the stock market: NuScale Power, Oklo Inc, X-energy, and NANO Nuclear Energy Inc. (NASDAQ: NNE). Their share prices peaked around twelve months ago. Since then? Down 50% to 80% from their highs. Perhaps public markets are tiring of an industry that has delivered extraordinary promises — but comparatively few reactors. Meanwhile, executives and early shareholders at some companies have cashed out hundreds of millions of dollars. Then comes the economics. With nuclear CAPEX estimated at $15–20/W — your guess is probably as good as ours — and brutally long lead times, nuclear must compete with hydro at around $10/W, gas at roughly $4/W (up from $1/W), wind at $2–5/W, and solar plus batteries at around $0.40/W. That is an uncomfortable competitive landscape. And we haven't even discussed fuel. Russia still controls roughly 40% of the conventional nuclear fuel supply chain — and effectively 100% of the HALEU capacity required by some advanced SMR designs. Laurent then tackles another abused acronym: FOAK — First Of A Kind. What does it really mean? All this — and much more — in our yearly deep dive into nuclear: the technology, economics, geopolitics, promises, and the increasingly uncomfortable gap between them.

In the base-case scenario, gasoline demand in India's transport sector continues to rise into the 2040s as economic growth, rising household incomes and continued urbanization drive increased passenger vehicle ownership. Despite increasing adoption of EVs, the expansion of the light-duty vehicle fleet and relatively low car ownership per capita compared with developed economies support ongoing growth in gasoline consumption.
