In Delaware's Christina School District, administrators worked with WestEd to develop a dashboard to help measure the cost of a program alongside data tracking students’ academic outcomes from that investment. Nathalie Princilus, Ed.D., supervisor of grants and unique programs at the 13,000-student district, and Kelsey Krausen, PhD, director of education finance at WestEd, discussed how to implement such a practice and tool during a Thursday session at ASBO International’s 2026 Annual Conference & Expo in Pittsburgh. https://lnkd.in/grUCpFPY #K12 #SchoolFinance #SchoolLeaders #EdChat

“You have to convince people that there are limits to their knowledge,” said Jerry Rosiek, education studies department head at University of Oregon’s College of Education. “Generally, it’s assumed that the best way to do that is to get students involved in an inquiry or some sort of a dialogue, where their own knowledge of the topic is revealed to be inadequate,” said Rosiek. “They’ve already done physics, but here’s a physics problem,” and what they already know “doesn’t solve the problem.” https://lnkd.in/gEdusyzN #K12 #Curriculum

Two Democratic memberes of the Senate Appropriations Committee on Tuesday accused the U.S. Department of Education of “frontloading” grants — or making multi-year funding available in one lump sum ahead of time rather than funding a larger number of grants over time, as is typical. “In implementing this policy, the Department is intentionally and sharply limiting the number of new grants it will award, by concentrating funds into fewer grants and withholding significant portions of appropriated resources for use in future budget periods,” said U.S. Senators Patty Murray, D-Wash., and Tammy Baldwin, D-Wisc, in an Oct. 13 letter. https://lnkd.in/g4M3rKb4 #K12 #EdPolicy

A unanimous ruling by a three-judge panel on Ohio's 10th District Court of Appeals found the state’s EdChoice and related programs are “undermining the financial integrity of public schools.” In its ruling, the court said the program “is cherry-picking” students from public schools who are inexpensive to educate while leaving the students who need more resources for public schools. The judges said the program is also “slowly eroding support for local school levies” by incentivizing families to leave public schools through means such as reducing or eliminating the cost of private schools, which takes a toll on public school enrollment and finances. https://lnkd.in/g_jFygar #K12 #EdPolicy #SchoolChoice

“In the next decade, there are projected to be over 800,000 quantum-related jobs, and not as many qualified applicants for those jobs,” said Michelle Reid, superintendent of Fairfax County Public Schools, which is partnering on the quantum curriculum with the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority and George Mason University. “There’s a recognition that creating a workforce pathway in the quantum field is critically important.” https://lnkd.in/gf7Ujjid #K12 #Curriculum #STEM

Facilities professionals have been raising the alarm that $80 billion in backlogged school maintenance and repairs are impacting students’ learning experience, and now that’s been quantified, said NAESCO - National Association of Energy Service Companies Executive Director Timothy Unruh. The U.S. Government Accountability Office released findings last month showing that a fifth of school districts had to cancel classes at least once in the 2024-25 academic year because of facilities issues. https://lnkd.in/gdGv78k9 #K12 #SchoolFacilities #EdPolicy
