“My laptop is slow” is a request that takes four words to write, but it can take hours to resolve. An IT admin has to identify the employee, find their assigned device, check its age and memory, figure out the likely cause, and decide whether to troubleshoot, replace, or escalate. Agents are good at exactly that kind of work. What they shouldn't do is decide who gets to spend company money. So Rippling Helpdesk is built as a hybrid: AI interprets the request and diagnoses the problem. Structured intake, policy evaluation, approvals, and fulfillment stay deterministic — anchored in Rippling's permissions graph. The model can help determine what an employee needs. It can't create permission to act. The part we didn't expect to be the hard problem: what happens when there's no policy for what someone asked for. Helpdesk records it, then clusters similar unsupported requests so admins can see that ten people asked for Salesforce specifically — not that 50 people asked for "app access."
