I've trained 10,000+ salespeople. The ones who fail all miss these 3 critical elements: Here's the picture: A salesperson walks into a meeting, perfectly dressed, armed with all the right techniques. But their voice shakes slightly. Their confidence wavers. And the prospect can smell it... The problem isn't their skills or knowledge. It's deeper than that. In fact, 80% of success in sales is due to psychology—mindset, beliefs, and emotions. Only 20% comes from strategy. Most training programs focus solely on tactics: • Cold calling scripts • Closing techniques • Objection handling But they miss what I call the Holy Trinity of Performance: What you think What you say What you do Let's break down each element, starting with the foundation: 1. What You Think Your mindset shapes everything: • How you approach prospects • How you handle rejection • How you close deals Research shows 65% of salespeople are poor to average. And 72% of reasons for not closing sales come down to beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors. These aren't just statistics. They're proof that what's happening in your mind determines what happens in your wallet. When you approach a sale with fear or doubt your amygdala triggers fear responses. It prevents you from thinking clearly and making good decisions. The solution is to train your mind like an athlete trains their body. 2. What You Say Words have power. But most salespeople use them wrong. They focus on features instead of transformation. They pitch instead of lead. But elite salespeople understand three elements of influence: • Emotional urgency (desire to improve life) • Rational decision (logical benefits) • Circumstantial urgency (timing/scarcity) Miss any one of these, and your words lose their power. Your words must align with your thoughts. If you don't believe in what you're saying, your prospect will know. Don't just memorize scripts. Speak with certainty, clarity, and conviction. 3. What You Do Action without strategy is just motion. The best salespeople follow a clear process: • They prepare meticulously • They execute boldly • They reflect and adjust constantly But most go wrong by treating sales like a series of random events instead of a strategic mission. Every interaction should have: • Clear objectives • Defined process • Measurable outcomes This is how elite performers operate. And it's what separates them from everyone else. But the key is you must train all three elements CONSISTENTLY. Just like athletes don't read a book about football and then play in the NFL... You can't expect one training session to transform your sales performance. Train like a warrior: • Weekly mindset work • Regular role-playing • Constant skill sharpening And you company's sales success will come from how your sales leaders train your team. Not through quick fixes or magic scripts. But through mastery of the Holy Trinity.

  • Sales success is not about charisma, luck, or having the “perfect pitch.” After years in this field, I’ve realized it’s actually about what you do after the rejection. That’s where the 3 R’s come in. 1️⃣ Reset – Renew Your Drive + Clarity After every tough call or lost deal, pause. Step back. Analyze what went wrong. Recharge your mindset. Sales is a long game. If you carry the baggage of yesterday’s "no" into today’s meeting, you’ve already lost. The best salespeople hit reset fast → and show up fresh for the next client. 👉Ask yourself: Am I starting this call with yesterday’s energy or today’s clarity? 2️⃣ Reframe – Shift Your Pitch Through Connection Most salespeople talk. The best ones listen. Instead of pushing the same pitch, they reframe the conversation around the client’s world: What’s their pain point? What’s keeping them awake at night? How can I solve, not sell? Reframing builds trust. And trust is the only currency that closes deals in B2B. 👉Remember: Growth doesn’t come from more words. It comes from deeper relationships. 3️⃣ Respond – Move Forward with Smart Actions Sales is not a script. You won’t always get the answer you want. But how you respond decides whether the conversation ends or evolves. The pros don’t panic. They reflect, adjust, and move forward with micro-wins: A follow-up call booked. A small insight uncovered. A champion identified inside the account. 👉Small, smart responses compound into big wins over time. Don’t measure your success by the one deal you closed. Measure it by how many times you showed up strong after hearing “no.” That’s where mastery lives. That’s where sales careers are built.

  • Signs you'll probably be good at sales: • You're nice to waiters and service staff when there's nothing to gain. • You can improvise a conversation with a child without getting frustrated. • Your friends and family feel safe opening up to you. • You don't take someone else's bad day as a personal attack. • You ask follow-up questions because you're genuinely curious. • You can disagree with someone without needing to win. • You remember small details about people. • You're comfortable sitting in awkward silence. • You don't need to be the most interesting person in the room. • You can explain something differently when someone doesn't understand. • You can laugh at yourself. • You don't panic when plans change. • You can make a stranger feel like they aren't speaking to a stranger. • You recover quickly from rejection. • You know the difference between listening and waiting for your turn to talk. • You leave people feeling slightly better than when they found you. Sales at its best is emotional regulation, curiosity and making other people feel understood.

Everyone talks about what is changing in sales that I think it's important to remember what will NEVER change in sales... 👇 Yes, AI is important. Yes, technology advances. Yes, buyers change. BUT there are a lot of things in sales that will never change: 1 - Sales will ALWAYS be about solving problems and helping people. ↳ People can tell when someone is only interested in selling something. ↳ The focus should always be on the problem you solve, not the product. 2 - Listen always has been, and always will be, more important than talking. ↳ The best salespeople listen 2-3X more than they talk. ↳ They ask the right questions and give their customers time to answer. ↳ The encourage their customers to elaborate and go deeper. 3 - People buy from people they TRUST. ↳ In an AI dominated world, trust has never been more valuable. ↳ If they don't trust you, they'll find a salesperson they do trust. 4 - Never sell something to someone who doesn't NEED it. ↳ You might win a sale, but chances are it will get cancelled. ↳ There's also the risk they tell others about their bad experience. 5 - Lying is NEVER acceptable in sales. ↳ If you lie to win a sale, chances are it won't last. ↳ No good salesperson will ever need to lie to win a sale. 6 - Sales success will always be based on hard and smart work. ↳ Hard work is important, but hard smart work will always win. ↳ Quality and quantity come hand in hand in sales. 7 - Salespeople need to be RESILIENT to win at sales. ↳ You'll face a lot of rejection, objection and challenge. ↳ The best in sales walk through it and know how to deal with it. 8 - The most important sales skill is the ability to ADAPT. ↳ Adapting to new tech, new platforms, new tools and new processes. ↳ Adapting to each individual prospect and customer. I'll be the first to embrace new things in sales. But I'll always follow the basics. And after 20+ years in sales I can tell you one thing... The basics will always win. Always.

In sales, business acumen is oxygen. Lose it, and no amount of technique will save you. I see this every day. An AE has good discovery questions. Solid demo structure. Perfect follow-up cadence. But they can't talk to a CFO. They don't understand P&Ls. They can't connect their solution to revenue, margin, or cash flow. And the deal dies. The same thing happens in B2B every day. But the best reps know how to recognize business impact and articulate it. How to recognize business impact: – When a problem affects revenue, not just productivity – When the pain shows up in board meetings, not just team meetings – When solving it changes the trajectory of the business, not just a workflow How to articulate it: – Speak in metrics that executives care about (CAC, LTV, gross margin, cash flow) – Connect your solution to their annual plan and strategic priorities – Quantify the cost of inaction in dollars, not just "inefficiency" The best sellers don't win because they have better features. They win because they understand business better than their competitors. P.S. Are you a seller who refuses to be average? • The best sellers create direction. It's the difference between: - stalled deals and momentum - interest and commitment - being liked and being trusted And it is not personality. It is a set of skills. Skills like: - creating clarity in complexity - guiding decisions, not just sharing options - reducing risk before it shows up - challenging thinking with care - anchoring everything in real business outcomes This is what top sellers do differently. Not occasionally. Consistently. And it is what drives: - larger deals - faster movement - stronger client trust The infographic breaks it down. Most people read this and think “That is a great seller.” The best ones think... “That is a skillset I can build.” That is the shift. I go deeper on how to actually build these skills in my newsletter and live sessions. Link: https://lnkd.in/g2xQeJ4U 📌 Save this. These approaches show up in every deal. • My team has closed hundreds of millions of $$ in deals over the years. Our most underrated skill: Super active listening. See, most people think sales is about what you say. The best salespeople ask. The worst salespeople tell. The reality is that listening matters even more. Listening helps you: 1. Understand your prospects problem 2. Understand their background 3. Understand their emotions 4. Give them the best solution 5. Show that you care 6. Be generally likable 7. Increase your status This goes beyond sales too. It makes you a better: - Networker - Coworker - Manager - Parent - Friend Get 100% present with people. Ask deep questions. Pay attention to para-verbal and non verbal cues. Lock in. It makes a difference.

  • Staffing agencies have a big personality problem. Too many firms still rely on personality or behavioral tests like DISC to screen sales candidates. The assumption has been... High “D” and moderately high “I” equals a top sales producer. The reality is... Personality is NOT a predictor of sales or recruitment performance. If it was, recruiter attrition wouldn’t hover around 34%. And we all know plenty of high Ds and Is who couldn’t sell candy 🍭 to a sweet tooth 🦷. I have led elite sales teams where my consultants were earning monthly commissions of 34K, 46K, and 58K. Month after month! And although they shared many traits...big personality wasn't one of them. They were high strung, laid back, extroverts, introverts, funny, boring, kind, and yes, a few were border-line knobs. If you have led sales teams you know sales success isn’t tied to a particular personality type. It’s tied to sales-specific competencies. No wonder why the most effective staffing organizations with the lowest attrition rates and highest retention & quota attainment use assessments built for sales. With more than 65K companies and 2.5M assessments behind it, our sales candidate assessment by OMG has stood the test of time. Why? Because it measures 21-Core Sales Competencies, broken into three categories: • Will to Sell → drive & motivation • Sales DNA → beliefs & habits that help or hinder • Tactical Competencies → skills across the sales cycle Plus development factors such as coach-ability, learning agility, and ramp up speed. If you run a staffing agency and are dealing with big personalities, high turnover and low quota attainment, reach out. I'd be happy to share our predictive assessments with you.

  • Hard truth: Most sales teams obsess over tactics… But ignore the soft skills that actually drive results. The best sellers aren’t just great at demos and outreach. They’re great at people. Here are 8 soft skills that separate top reps from everyone else: 1.) Lifelong Learning They treat every call, every loss, every win as a lesson. No ego. Just growth. 2.) Dependability They show up prepared. On time. Every time. Trust is their compounding edge. 3.) Emotional Intelligence They stay calm under fire and read the room. No panicking. No pitching past the pain. 4.) Time Management They say no. Delegate fast. And protect their calendar like revenue depends on it... because it does. 5.) Persuasion They use logic, emotion, and story to lead buyers to a decision. No pushing. Just clarity and confidence. 6.) Resilience They bounce back fast. Every "no" sharpens their edge. 7.) Adaptability They change plans when the buyer does. No rigidity. No excuses. 8.) Communication They don’t just talk. They tailor, listen, and speak with impact. — Want more reps hitting quota? Don’t just coach call structure. Build these 8 skills into your culture. Because the best scripts won’t save a rep who lacks EQ, focus, or follow-through. • The higher you climb in your career, the more you realize: almost every senior role is, in some way, a sales job. Not just selling products. You're selling ideas. Visions. Strategies. Yourself. Leaders pitch to investors. Managers advocate for teams. Specialists influence stakeholders. The skills that make great salespeople are the same ones that open doors at the top. Listening deeply. Building trust. Persuading with conviction. Negotiating outcomes. Sales teaches you to read people. To handle rejection. To persist when others give up. These aren't just sales skills. They're leadership skills. Executive skills. Life skills. In my view, sales is one of the best career choices you can make today. Master it early. Thrive in almost any role tomorrow. Your future self will thank you for learning how to sell before you need to lead.
