  • Technical Assessment: Bullish in the Intermediate-Term

The major indices appear to be in short-term consolidation mode following the November month-end surge. In other words, prices look like they are tracing out small bull flags so as to work off some short-term overbought conditions before a possible run at the all-time highs (ATHs) from the end of October. A completion of the flags likely would take the majors into ATH territory, as the recent price pause is just under the prior highs. The indices also look like they are tracing out bullish inverse head-and-shoulders formations and possibly cup-with-handle patterns. For now, it looks like we will see new highs before this already positive year is finished. There are a number of breadth indicators that are close to completing bullish thrusts. As we have said, breadth thrusts are much more typical after big pullbacks, corrections, or bear markets -- and not with prices already so close to all-time highs. In our view, the thrusts themselves are not necessary as we think the current breadth stats are strong enough (considering that the major indices have barely pulled back during the recent setback). Funds have come back into stocks quickly and the areas of accumulation have been broader than what occurred over the past few years. Widening our viewing to the weekly charts, there isn't much to not like. The S&P 500 remains between the middle and upper weekly Bollinger Bands (where the most-consistent uptrends occur), the 13-week exponential is above the 26-week (which is above the 40-week), and weekly momentum is not even close to extreme overbought territory.
