This week at Safeway in Surprise, Arizona, we celebrated more than the completion of a beautifully remodeled store — we celebrated community, connection, and a love story years in the making. The day was filled with the joyful sounds of a local high school marching band, the energy of spirited cheerleaders, and the warmth of outstanding educators and community partners who helped make the event shine. But the sweetest moment belonged to Marty and Rosemary from the meat department at Safeway Store #1997. Decades ago, Safeway gained something truly special when this wonderful couple relocated from Dominick’s in Chicago after requesting a transfer to Arizona. And perhaps the most remarkable part of their story is this: through all their years of marriage, they have worked side by side in the meat department for more than 50 years — partners in life, in love and in service to their community. #Safeway #Love

These moments are wonderful reminders of the bonds our store teams create in their community well beyond our business. A customer who the entire staff affectionately calls grandma sings a farewell song to Store Director Chris H at the Centralia Safeway, the last day before he starts a new adventure at a store in Arizona. Safeway in Oro Valley, Arizona, welcomed neighbors and community partners to celebrate its beautiful remodel this week! Tucked near the western foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains, with Pusch Ridge standing proudly in the distance, the store was filled with hometown charm and lively energy during the Re-Grand Opening celebration of this newly refreshed 'community gem' in the heart of town. How do you build awareness for childhood hunger? Sometimes, one cereal box at a time. This week, local student athletes, community leaders, and Denver Broncos All-Pro linebacker Nik Bonitto put their skills to the test during the Safeway Grocery Combine. From speed bagging challenges to building towering stacks of cereal boxes, every activity highlighted the importance of ensuring children have access to nutritious meals when school is out or on weekends. Safeway's Nourishing Neighbors, the Bonitto Family Foundation, and Food Bank of the Rockies are teaming up to help keep kids fueled and ready to succeed as we prepare to head back to school. Customers can support the campaign through August 11th by donating at Safeway and Albertsons stores across Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska. This week, the Seattle Division launched the Food First Project, a multi-year fundraising campaign benefiting the patient families of Seattle Children's and helping address pediatric food insecurity across our communities.   Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba will serve as the inaugural champion for the campaign, raising awareness about the critical connection between nutrition and a child's health, recovery and long-term well-being.   At Seattle Children’s, one in three patient families experience food insecurity, creating additional challenges for children recovering from illness, injury or managing chronic health conditions. The Food First Project is designed to provide immediate, dignified support when needs are identified, helping families access nutritious food without unnecessary barriers.   Funds raised through the Food First Project will support: ✅ Direct family assistance through grocery cards, produce vouchers, and on-site pantries for families facing food insecurity. ✅ Food-as-medicine programs and clinical nutrition initiatives, including specialized meals and equipment for pediatric patients with prescribed dietary restrictions and needs. ✅ Support for families staying in-patient while their children receive treatment at Seattle Children’s. ✅ Long-term advocacy and research focused on the connection between pediatric food security and chronic illnesses and conditions.
