Watch: Masters of the Universe Review: Spectacular Visuals Can’t Fully Save Uneven Reboot

Masters of the Universe brings He-Man back to cinemas with stunning visuals, energetic action and a cast fully committed to the material. But while the film succeeds as a nostalgic spectacle, its uneven storytelling prevents it from becoming the definitive revival many fans were hoping for.

Director Travis Knight embraces the colourful world of Eternia and delivers a movie that feels far more ambitious than previous adaptations. The result is entertaining, often exciting and visually impressive, even if the screenplay struggles to keep pace with the scale of its ideas.

A Different Take on He-Man

Rather than introducing Adam as an already unstoppable hero, the film presents him as an insecure young prince struggling to meet the expectations placed on him by his father, King Randor.

Nicholas Galitzine handles this version of Adam well. He convincingly portrays a character caught between self-doubt and responsibility, making him more relatable than the traditional invincible action hero often associated with the franchise.

After Eternia falls under attack from Skeletor, Adam escapes to Earth with the Sword of Power. Years later, he is living an ordinary life, disconnected from the destiny he left behind. The discovery of the sword eventually forces him back into the conflict and sets up his journey toward becoming He-Man.

The concept works. Unfortunately, the execution is not always consistent.

Visuals and Action Carry the Film

The strongest aspect of Masters of the Universe is easily its presentation.

Eternia looks spectacular. The vibrant colours, large-scale environments and fantasy-inspired designs capture the spirit of the original franchise while giving it a modern cinematic look.

The action scenes are equally impressive. Battles feel energetic and inventive, and the film rarely lacks momentum. Even during weaker narrative moments, the visual spectacle keeps things moving.

Jared Leto also proves to be one of the film’s most entertaining elements. His version of Skeletor embraces the character’s theatrical nature without becoming a complete parody. He is menacing when required but also provides some of the film’s most enjoyable moments through his exaggerated personality and dark humour.

The supporting cast adds further strength. Idris Elba brings authority and presence as Duncan, while Camila Mendes and Alison Brie make strong impressions despite limited screen time.

Too Many Ideas, Not Enough Focus

The biggest issue is not the cast or the visual effects. It is the screenplay.

The film attempts to explore self-worth, leadership, masculinity, family pressure, trauma and heroism all within a single story. As a result, many themes receive only surface-level attention before the narrative rushes toward the next action sequence.

Adam’s development is particularly uneven.

At times he is presented as an awkward and uncertain young man. Moments later he becomes a confident inspirational leader without enough growth happening between those scenes. The transitions often feel abrupt rather than earned.

The same inconsistency affects the film’s tone.

One scene may focus on loss or emotional drama, only for the next to switch immediately into comedy. The constant shifts make it difficult for important emotional moments to fully resonate.

Several supporting characters also feel underused. Teela, Evil-Lyn and the Sorceress all play important roles within the mythology, yet the film rarely gives them enough space to develop beyond their core functions in the plot.

Worth Watching?

Masters of the Universe succeeds as a visually exciting fantasy adventure and offers enough nostalgia to satisfy many longtime fans. The cast is strong, the action delivers and Eternia has never looked better on screen.

However, the film’s inconsistent character development, tonal shifts and overcrowded screenplay prevent it from reaching its full potential.

Fans of He-Man and large-scale fantasy blockbusters will likely find plenty to enjoy. Those expecting a tightly written story with deep emotional payoffs may leave disappointed. It’s an entertaining return to Eternia that gets the look and spirit right, even if the storytelling occasionally loses its way.
