UCL FInal: PSG Make History With Back-to-Back Champions League Triumph

Paris Saint-Germain retained the Champions League title after beating Arsenal 4-3 on penalties in Budapest. The final ended 1-1 after extra time, before Gabriel Magalhaes missed the decisive spot-kick for Arsenal.

The result made PSG only the second club to defend the Champions League title since the competition was renamed in 1992. Real Madrid were the only previous team to do it, winning three straight titles from 2016 to 2018.

Arsenal came close to their first Champions League trophy, but their wait goes on. The Premier League champions led early and defended for long spells, but PSG forced their way back into the match and held their nerve in the shootout.

Kai Havertz gave Arsenal the perfect start. Marquinhos tried to clear the ball, but it hit Leandro Trossard and dropped into Havertz’s path. The Arsenal forward carried it forward from near halfway and scored from a tight angle.

PSG had more of the ball, but Arsenal stayed compact and made the game difficult. Arsenal finished with only 26 percent possession, the lowest share recorded by any team in a Champions League final since Opta began collecting that data in 2004.

The pressure finally told in the second half. Cristhian Mosquera fouled Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in the penalty area, and VAR confirmed the decision after a long check.

Ousmane Dembele took the penalty and sent David Raya the wrong way to make it 1-1.

Neither side found a winner in normal time or extra time. PSG kept pushing, but Arsenal’s defensive shape held. The final then went to penalties, the first Champions League final shootout since Real Madrid beat Atletico Madrid in 2016.

Eberechi Eze missed for Arsenal, while Raya gave his team hope by saving from Nuno Mendes. Lucas Beraldo later scored PSG’s final penalty, leaving Gabriel needing to convert to keep Arsenal alive.

That miss sealed PSG’s second straight Champions League title and started the celebrations among their players and fans.

PSG Join Europe’s Elite

PSG became the 10th club in European Cup history to win back-to-back titles. The achievement also confirmed their place among the strongest teams of the modern Champions League era.

For Luis Enrique, the victory added another major chapter to his coaching career. He had already won the Champions League with Barcelona in 2014-15, and this latest win gave him a third European Cup as a manager.

He joined a small group of coaches with three or more European Cup titles. Carlo Ancelotti leads the list with five, while Bob Paisley, Zinedine Zidane and Pep Guardiola have also won three.
