Determined to check the menace of gully erosion that is threatening the environment around Gombe State University especially in the rainy season, the State Government in conjunction with the Nigeria Erosion Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) has embarked on planting trees and constructing waste collection points in the University.
The program is also paying attention to some other parts of the state capital that are affected by different forms of land degradation are also benefiting with the intention to plant between 500 to 1000 trees in GSU alone.
While Speaking to newsmen shortly after commencing work at the Gombe State University, which has witnessed age-long ecological problems, Water Resources Specialist with NEWMAP, Engineer Ayuba Anda, who is the Manager Project, said that the programme is in furtherance of Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s project, Gombe Goes Green (3G’s).
According to him, the noble idea falls in line with the principal objective of NEWMAP in restoring degraded land, protecting it, reforestation and forestation in order to combat the menace of climate change as a result of desertification.
A lot of gully erosion control work has taken place in the GSU and Engineer Anda said, “we want to ensure that every investment that is been done in terms of erosion control, we follow it with bioremediation.”
He added that this will stabilise the soil and protect what is already put in place in the university environment.
“Before the commencement, there was serious engagement with the GSU community as they were sensitised on the need for maintenance in terms of waste management and reforestation,” he stated.
Speaking earlier, Murtala Salish, Director of Works and Physical Planning of GSU, said the project was a welcomed one as facilities in the school are now safer.
“Our environment is now safer, buildings protected from encroachment. It will also improve the beauty of the University which attracts a lot of people from within and outside the state,” he stated.
He assured of maintenance of the project stressing that the University already has the culture. “We will properly maintain it, avoid dumping of refuse in the gullies, make sure they are clean and free,” he said.
