Feeling incredibly grateful after the Women Get On Board Inc. (WGOB) Speakers Series. A huge thank you to the Directors and governance leaders from across Canada who joined us to talk about modernizing board evaluations — and, more importantly, strengthening governance. The questions, perspectives and experiences shared reinforced exactly why BIG | Best In Governance undertook this research. Board evaluations have become an established governance practice. But the world Boards are governing has changed dramatically — and we need to keep asking whether the way we evaluate them has kept pace. A special thank you to Women Get On Board and Dr. Deborah Rosati FCPA, FCA, ICD.D, GCB.D, CCB.D for partnering with BIG on this research and creating the space for such a thoughtful national conversation. My favourite question to leave everyone with was also the simplest: Are we prepared to govern what comes next? So grateful to everyone who showed up, leaned in and contributed to the conversation. This is exactly how governance evolves. Missed the research? Access it here -> https://lnkd.in/dXvUvXus #BoardGovernance #BoardEffectiveness #ModernGovernance #BoardEvaluations #WomenGetOnBoard

Another incredible conversation — this time with the Governance Professionals who are so often behind the governance happening in our Boardrooms.   A huge thank you to the GPs from across Canada who joined us today, and Governance Professionals of Canada (GPC) for creating the space for this conversation.   We talked about modernizing Board evaluations — but through a very different lens.   Sharing this with the GPC community was especially meaningful as governance professionals sit at a unique intersection of the Board, Chair, Committees and Management. They see the holistic formal governance system, but they also see what lies beneath - where things get stuck, where issues keep resurfacing, and how governance works in practice.   And that creates an enormous opportunity for GPs to shift from administrators to architects.   Not simply: How do we administer this year’s evaluation? and How did we perform?   But: What does our Board need to understand about its governance right now and are we prepared to govern what's next?   Thank you to everyone who showed up, challenged the thinking and shared their perspectives today.   What would change on your board if your next evaluation started with those questions?   Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/dXvUvXus   #GovernanceProfessionals #BoardGovernance #BoardEffectiveness #ModernGovernance #BoardEvaluations

93% of board evaluations do not result in a formal action plan. For a process intended to strengthen Board effectiveness, that finding is startling. Boards invest significant time and resources in evaluations, generating insights, identifying opportunities and surfacing important governance issues. But insight alone doesn't strengthen governance. What matters is what happens next. Without clear priorities, accountability and follow-through, even a rigorous evaluation risks becoming an annual exercise rather than a catalyst for meaningful improvement. This was one of 10 reasons our research identified for why traditional board evaluations can fall short—spanning what they measure, how they're designed, whose perspectives they capture, whether they uncover root causes, and what happens after the findings are delivered. On September 8, we share all 10—and a new framework for doing things differently.

Yesterday we were delighted to join our friends with Women Get On Board Inc. (WGOB) and BIG | Best In Governance as they shared in a fireside chat about their latest research research paper: Modernizing Board Evaluations While evaluations may not be the topic that gets everyone excited on a Friday afternoon 🤭 ....we soaked up its findings and combed through the data with gusto! While there is lots left to unpack, one phrase stood out..."from retrospective assessment to forward-looking strategic governance". That mindset shift is a gamechanger for directors! What could be possible for your board if it stopped only looking backwards and shifted focus towards the the art of the possible informed by data it can meaningfully use? 🚀 To view the entire report check out BIG | Best In Governance Great work Ivy Lumia and Dr. Deborah Rosati FCPA, FCA, ICD.D, GCB.D, CCB.D 👏👏

We surveyed nearly 400 Board Chairs, Directors, and governance professionals to answer one question: are board evaluations keeping up with how governance has actually changed? The result? 96% say no. Our BIG Thoughts™ paper, Modernizing Board Evaluations, breaks down the 10 reasons traditional evaluations fall short and the six-pillar framework leading boards are using instead. What if the real value of a board evaluation isn’t the score it produces; but what it reveals about how a board actually governs? The new BIG Thoughts™ Annual Report 2026: Modernizing Board Evaluations, a collaboration between BIG | Best In Governance and Women Get On Board Inc. (WGOB), challenges boards to rethink an established governance practice. The research, informed by the perspectives of more than 400 Board Chairs, Directors, Governance Professionals, Executive Leaders, academics, regulators and governance practitioners, makes one thing clear: board evaluations need to evolve from measuring governance to strengthening it. As I shared in the report: “Board evaluations offer a clear view into culture—reflecting how a board listens, questions assumptions, reaches decisions, handles feedback, and exercises governance. Boards that possess the courage to govern, examine this reflection candidly, and maintain the discipline to act on their findings will be best equipped to lead tomorrow’s organizations.” For me, this is the heart of modern board evaluation. It’s not simply about asking, “How did we perform?” but rather, “Are we prepared to govern what comes next?”. The report identifies six pillars for modernizing board evaluations: from putting purpose before process and aligning evaluations with strategy and risk, to building an evidence-based evaluation, enabling meaningful participation, and most importantly, turning insight into action. I look forward to discussing the report and exploring these ideas further with Ivy Lumia, CEO & Founder of Best in Governance, at our upcoming WGOB Speaker Series fireside chat on September 17: “Modernizing Board Evaluations: Why Traditional Evaluations Fall Short and What Leading Boards Can Do Differently.” We’ll dig into what boards can do differently and how evaluations can become a more meaningful tool for oversight, accountability, and continuous improvement. Hot off the press! Big news from BIG | Best In Governance! As shared yesterday by my friend Ivy Lumia, "This research was shaped by the generosity of people who were willing to share their time, experience, perspectives and ideas. Contributions helped challenge conventional thinking, ask better questions, and ultimately produce research that will help move board evaluations — and governance — forward." My gratitude extends beyond being asked to contribute to this Report; to the opportunity I've had to walk beside, and learn from, Ivy Lumia over the past year. #governance #reciprocity

Board evaluations need to evolve from measuring governance to strengthening it. Today, BIG | Best In Governance, in collaboration with Women Get On Board Inc. (WGOB), is releasing Modernizing Board Evaluations—new research informed by more than 400 governance leaders examining whether traditional board evaluations remain fit-for-purpose. The findings point to a clear need for change:  96% say evaluations need to evolve, 85% would modernize their process if designing it today,  60% report their Board lacks a mechanism to identify governance risk, and  93% of board assessments do not result in formal action plans.  The research identifies 10 reasons board evaluations fall short and introduces BIG’s Six-Pillar Framework for Modernizing Board Evaluations—designed to help Boards move beyond assessing past performance to understanding whether their governance, capabilities and oversight are positioned for what comes next.  Because the real value of a board evaluation isn't the score. It's what the Board learns—and what it does differently as a result. Read the full research: https://lnkd.in/gQknECBT

Let’s be honest: has your board evaluation ever felt like an exercise that produced a report — but not much else? If you’re a board director or governance professional, chances are you’ve participated in a board evaluation. But ask yourself: -Did it change or improve how the Board operates? -Did it lead to action? Or did everyone complete the questionnaires, review the findings, have the discussion… and then move on? Because if an evaluation doesn’t generate meaningful insight, identify what needs to change, and drive action, what is it really evaluating? If you’ve ever been disappointed by the value you got from a board evaluation — or wondered whether your current approach is fit for purpose — read this paper. It may change the way you think about board evaluations altogether.

Today is a VERY big day for BIG — and for me personally. When we started this research, we had a question: Have board evaluations kept pace with the realities Boards are now governing? More than 400 governance leaders helped us answer it — and what emerged challenged us to rethink not just how we evaluate Boards, but what a board evaluation should actually be for. If strategy, risk and the operating environment are continually changing, assessing how the Board performed last year simply isn't enough. We need to be asking: Is the Board equipped to govern what comes next? I am incredibly proud of the research we are releasing today — but even more grateful to the people who made it possible. To every governance leader who participated, shared their experience, challenged our thinking and generously gave us their time and perspectives: thank you. It takes a (governance) village, and this research is stronger because of you. A very special thank you to Dr. Deborah Rosati FCPA, FCA, ICD.D, GCB.D, CCB.D and the Women Get On Board Inc. (WGOB) team for their collaboration and support — and, of course, to the BIG | Best In Governance team. I could not be prouder of what we have created together. After months of research, conversations, debate, writing (and rewriting!), the BIG Thoughts™ Research - Modernizing Board Evaluations is finally here. Today, I’m just incredibly proud and grateful. 💙
